Topic :   No battle scenes at all? WTF?

I wasn't expecting a big budget movie's kind of battle scene that goes on for 15+ minutes, but not one frame?  Seriously?  I was pretty disappointed with this episode.  If they don't bother to do any battle scenes for the entire series, it's going to be pretty damned fail.

I haven't chimed in about the show in a long while, but I have to say I was expecting a bit more.  Everything feels rushed.  And so much is left out.  The beheading scene fell flat too because IIRC there was a lot more build up and false foreshadowing that Ned would be pardoned if he confessed.  In the show, you really expect the treacherous turn much more, so the scene just didn't deliver nearly like how the book did.

I still like the show overall but, damn, it could be so much better.

First post. Super late to the party here. But I am going to say that you should read LOTR. If you like fantasy stories, then this is basically the grandfather of them all. At least all the ones you are likely to ever come across. You can pick any fantasy book published post 1965 or so and see how it has been influenced, or even directly based on Tolkien's work.

I read it the trilogy periodically and always enjoy it. It's one of the few books that I re-read and even though I pretty much know every line or scene, it's always interesting to read again. The invented language is something that is immensely enjoyable too. The more I re-read it, the more I pick up on it.

So we are back up, eh. Time to pack our bags, if you ask me.
I have the entire article from The New Yorker Magazine, and yes I am "interviewed" in it. I say "interviewed" because they really did their best to twist my words and I am very dissapointed, as Laura Miller seemed very professional and interested and fun to talk to.

I read the piece a few more times and have more to say about it really, but all in all I was prepared for this - being put in a bad light, that is - and the only reason I accepted to do the interview was to plug my upcoming Waiting for Dragons book, and at least that got included ;-)

Awfully quiet around here.....

TOO quiet......

Re :   Before Registering at Free Forums

Quick update: as of 5:07 Chicago time, I have purchased a new url for the site. The support staff informed me that it takes about 20-30 minutes for the change to take effect and that the site will be down during that time.

-Thanks

Re :   HBO 15 minute teaser

I liked it quite a lot, but I have many of the complaints you have already expressed:

The white walker: we discussed about it in another thread, when we were commenting one of the clips, and I still have the same opinion. It is lame as hell, though thankfully we don't get to see its face quite as clearly as in that trailer.

Winterfell: I didn't like it AT ALL. Not only because of the weird aspect of the towers, but because of the surrounding space. I imagined it in a forest and with a little village outside its gates. Now it's in the middle of nowhere. Why would you like to build a castle there?

Will: the scene where they capture him is amazing, and the beheading as well, very haunting and visual. It is weird that the ww let him go, but they might have intended him to tell everyone that they were back.

The girl in the forest is creepy, but I would have preferred to have Ser Waymar Royce coming back as an undead with blue eyes, just as it was in the book.

What else... oh, Arya. Yes. The amazing kickass girl. They should have made her hit the target from the sewing room and with her eyes closed ¬¬ I've always had a problem with Arya, sometimes she has a kind of Mary-Sueness that makes me wonder why people think she is a more realistic than Sansa. Maisie is great, though, he can speak volumes with her eyes.

I liked the script very much, and the fact that Jon and Bran seem to be very close. It's not mentioned explicitly in the book, but Jon's reactions when Bran is in coma talk of a very good relationship. Also, as scorpi said, Jon's line "Father is watching. And your mother" is genius, though I doubt the audience will notice it.

It's completely normal that Lady Slynt has questions, I always have them when I start watching a new series. However, 750.000 viewers is not a very good number for such an advertised preview. Let's hope the premiere gathers more people, or the chances of seeing more seasons will vanish.

Re :   GRRM vs. LOST

The only part of the ending that I think they had planned was the closeup of Jacks eye as he died.  I don't think much else was planned.  The ending was, as Scorpiknox said, OK.  It was basically a "good-bye" to all the character that people watched over the years.  If they had tried to answer everything it wouldn't have worked very well.  To answer everything they would have started answering everything in the beginning of season 6, but then people would have figured out what the "flash-sideways" was all about well before the ending.  That was part of the mystery of season 6. What was the flash-sideways? Could have been better, but could have been worse too.  Still one of my favorite shows of all-time.

After you've registered Free Forums asks for your cell phone number.  In he UPPER-RIGHT HAND CORNER is a PASS link.  You have to hit that fucker about 20 times, their persistent little bastards, but eventually they'll get the hint that you don't want to give them your number.

I have just registered. There was no phone-number field required or any such ...

Re :   [Suggestions] ReToolling & ReBranding IWC.

Speaking as someone who hasn't posted much lately I think we should rebrand. With a hot brand right up Ge....No wait seriously.

Assuming the book really is about to come out. We can't slate Captain Vacation about Winds for 2 or 3 years. But we are Ice and Fire fans thats why we're here. And we're detractors. So it should just be that, a site where you can criticize anything and everything about the books the show, comics, the calendars, and of course Valyrian Steel.

I like the name "Is Winter Coming" For me it has a double meaning A) Wheres the fucking book? and B)Where are the Others Is their Invasion ever actually going to happen? Whats going on in this story? Back when I read that prologue I thought it was a getting into a Horror/Fantasy Genre bender.  I actually gave up on the series (for a few years) after part 1 of Storm I thought. Ok Joffreys king, Robbs in The Riverlands, Danys in the east, Jons in the North. Nothings changed since Game, and then Feast came out, without any good characters.  Right at the end of feast Jaime says "I know, a note from the citadel winter has come" At fucking last. But then it hasn't because we have to go back in time to find out what the other characters are doing.  Is Winter Coming?. It's a good name.

There's a rant for you right there which isn't (directly) criticizing George Re-Read Martin. And so many people will want to vent about the show. ABOUT THE LAME WIGHT (WALKER) When it departs from the books in one way or another. Cercies ugly. That fight was supposed to be bigger. They didn't introduce whichever character. I wanted to actually see the battle of the Trident. etc.

Dance may or may not be toilet paper, I'm telling myself it will be awesome but who knows. Even if it's good there will be boring characters excessive descriptions of tabbards and banquets to bitch about. I think we may get a surge after the show and book come, out at the moment theres nothing to dissect and tart about, but we also can't complain about the infinite wait because he's....oh no we still can.

Finish the Fucking Book George.

Topic :   The final move: We're going home

After the last two or three days of not getting access here I finally shelled out some hard-earned copper stags to buy a premium account over at freeforums, which silent majority has tested as well.
I have this morning set up the boards - fewer than here, as suggested by members - and it would be very nice if you ported over any threads that you are the author of.

What I did, for example, with the "Questions about Writing" thread was that I had it open and the new place open in two windows, and then just copied/pasted the posted material. All I did was put an "Originally posted by..." atop each member's post and then copied/pasted the thread over. You can do it in a more lazy manner as well, just copy the whole page over (like we did for some of the threads here) - takes less time.

Instead of me doing this for each and every thread here - which would take me weeks if not months - I hope you can port over threads you have created that you wish to see continued at our new and much much improved home. If you can't be bothered, you can obviously just create a new thread on the same topic in the new place.

The new place is:
darkwingsdarkwords.freeforums.org

NOW before you start complaining about smilies or whatever, give me time to adjust! Lots of things to do and learn and tweak, but at least it has a friendly UI, and I think things will go along quite nicely - once we're re-settled (for the last damn time I tells you) we can start furnishing our home.

Take any suggestions, ideas, questions about the new (and final!) boards here please:

Note that while the domain is called darkwingsdarkwords, you don't have to agree with the title. I just had to move today, since I had an opening in my schedule, and I didn't want to wait until everybody was online to concur or disagree. The logo of the new boards is also preliminary and if you suggest a better title for the new place, we'll just change the logo for that.

In the "State of the Boards" thread I have outlined my reasoning for the name "Dark Wings, Dark Words".

Hope to see you in a relatively stable environment soon.

SLYNT
