The third incarnation of this topic! Discuss Steven Erikson's work here. Discussion about the books, questions about the plot and characters and everything else.
This thread is spoiler heavy so beware, despite that always say what book you are talking about and colour white the spoilers to avoid tears.

Ok, I have a question. I'm in Toll the Hounds and ... (spoilers) Rallick Nom has returned to Daruhjistan. Something happened (in Gardens of the Moon I suspect) which makes his return something of an event. But what happened that I have forgotten? When he re-appeared in TTH I had forgotten the character.(spoilers)

Good to have you back, Iblis.
Follow-up question:

(Spoilers ahoy!)
Why were they sealed in the Azath House in the first place? This is in Gardens of the Moon right?)

Vorcan was escaping from the Tistii Andii hunters and Rallick just felt that it was the right thing to do. Almost as if he were called to go in.

I'm really tempted to do a re-read of the series before i get my grubby paws on TCG. But when i look at these elephantine tomes all laid out before me, it's simply too daunting. So instead of that, i sit in bed and drink.

And yet i'm still more productive than a certain author.

Started Midnight Tides yesterday... The writing is really good improving with each volume... also for others reading Midnight Tides. Don't read the back of Reaper's Gale like this dumbass.

Couple of days and I will finally be done with Midnight Tides, the only book so far I could consider a bit of a chore. However, some of the stuff in it seems very Lovecraftian, which is cool.

How about the interaction between Tehol Beddict and Bugg - wasn't that fun?

They most certainly were fun, and at that point in the series it was nice to have some comic relief. The reason it isn't one of my favourite volumes is that it went a little over the top in Pratchettness. Tehol and Bugg were great. Harlest, Shurq, Ublala, just a bit too much.

Still a fine book, ofc.

Just starting book 3 of Midnight Tides... Brys has to bring two single edge swords to the guardian of the Azath?!... could it be the albino from the Prologue?

Re:The Book of the Fallen

I started Midnight Tides recently also and I am about 250 pages into it. I like it a lot...definitely the funniest malazan installment that I've read so far. I think I may have to take a short break after I finish this one though. I love Malazan, but I get tired of the endless puzzles, and flipping back to refresh my memories on events. For instance they mentioned the Eres is Midnight Tides and it sounded familiar-so i flipped back to House of Chains and found the reference I remembered. I know Rex mentioned that he didn't like Midnight Tides, but so far it's better then the first two books, about the same level as Memories of Ice, but not as good as House of Chains-but I'm only a third of the way through it so we'll see!

Apologies for the spoiler still working the new Aimoo. Does anyone have a firm grasp of the Mother Dark Father Light Father Shadow family tree or is it still kinda hazy? Light - Osseric Dark - Anomander Shadow - Bloodeye Those guys the sort of leaders of the Andii?

Not a problem. The spoiler itself is kinda minor either way.

As for the family tree it's extremely complicated. If you try to piece everything together your brain may catch fire. As for the leaders of the Andii yeah that's it, more or less. Except Bloodeye. He is dead. Or his he?

RE:The Book of the Fallen

I don't know if this is really spoilers, but I think basically Mother Dark and Father Light made babies (I guess the light and dark separately, and shadow together) and their "descendants" are Osserc (Light), Rake, Andarist, Silchas Ruin (Dark) and Scabandari Bloodeye (Shadow).

Also, Osseric has children, and there are three daughters of Shadow, and one of them has daughters, and it all starts getting confusing when you figure out how Tiam (the original dragon) is involved in all of this.

I'm on the finishing stretch now, well kinda. Only 100 or so pages left, which I intend to read tonight. I agree that Tehol and Bugg are hilarious, probably two of my favourite characters in this book. In fact, I vastly prefer the ongoings in Letheras to anything else that happens in the book, however since Seren met up with Iron Bars their storyline is getting more fun.

Ok, I am done. Finished at 6 am and man, what an ending.

Brys! Hull! The Ceda! Noooooooooooo! ;( Erikson is such a cruel bastard... I am just happy Tehol was brought back... if he'd died I might have actually cried. I think the moods that the amazing and epic finalé of this book induce are anger and satisfaction. A strange combination.

And damn it, just when I need some answers the malazan forum decides not to work. Grrrr.

He can indeed be cruel. Some of them still sting when I think about it. Though as you put it, I'm usually satisfied, with maybe one exception (yes, I'm talking to you Reaper's Gale).

Can RG really be THAT bad? And yeah... just THAT scene, beginning with Gerun chasing a certain woman... all the seperate little things that happened and turned into that one fatal clash... :(

Oh, I liked Reaper's Gale quite a lot, I'm not in that camp.

Just one of the climactic tragedies (if you will, I don't want to give much away) was just cruel, imo. Usually it's that mixture of sad and redemptive, but not this case.

Reaper's Gale has it's good parts, oliveira. Be fair.

Like... Ummm..... Damn. I hate everything about that book. Even the good parts that come as a shock. Erikson always says he believes his writing is intended to be cathartic, but in RG he crosses the line.

Well, I'll see when I get there. First, The Bonehunters (and AFFC...) Also, I of course realized the sudden amount of humour in RG and am of the opinion that maybe Erikson added it to counter out that soul-wrenching mess at the end. You know, like a comfort buffer. :(

Oh right.  Yeah not a whole lot of humour in RG. Instead you get bad timed humour! Like two witty characters having light banter while they taking care of a rape victim.

 Stay classy Erikson.
