I gave up during book three (or was it the beginning of book four)? Never even bought the three last installments. I don't know why I didn't dig it, really. There was a lot of potential and I loved the cross-genre stuff and the dialogue and the creativity evident...maybe another chance is in order one day. But there are still so many books with swords and armor and battles and stuff I need to read...gotta love medieval fantasy..

Well if I am not mistaken, King has stated that Roland(the main character) was his most hated character(or perhaps the one that bothered him the most, i dont quite remember), and the ending is obviously a big FUCK YOU to the character. I thought the ending was awesome. Especially since I didnt want a happy ending.

Hmm this is interesting. The role of Roland for the upcoming movie/tv seiries was offered to Javier Bardem.

Well, no surprise to anyone, but Dark Tower is the finest completed work of epic fantasy ever, IMHO. A brilliant combination of thriller, fantasy, horror and spaghetti Western. Personally I loved the ending. In fact, I would go so far as to say it's the only ending that would have worked. Roland must pay the price for his obsession. And don't forget, folks - King warns us. If you wanted the happy finish, cry off when King issues his warning. Otherwise, you continue at your own peril. For me, Stephen King is my favorite author, and Dark Tower is him writing in my favorite genre. What could be better? I cried more in Dark Tower VII than any other novel I've ever read. You are truly invested in these characters, and you really give a damn when something happens to them. I agree that introducing himself into the later novels was a risky conceit, and not perfectly executed, but I think he pulls it off, just barely. And only because Dark Tower is King's lifework, and he develops this concept into the plotline quite entertainingly, I think. Regarding the film, I'm hearing some disquieting things on other boards. The character of Susannah might be played by a white actress, which is just plain wrong on so many levels. I hope that is just a rumor. As to who should play Roland, I would much prefer Christian Bale to Javier Bardem, primarily because Bale has already proven he can lose weight for a role, and Roland must look gaunt. To those who stopped after the first book, please continue to Drawing of the Three. It is much more in King's trademark style, and it truly begins the real epic journey with the cross-overs into our contemporary world.

I think Bale and Bardem are way to high profile for these movies. They want to make a trilogy and a Tv series between said trilogy. I don't think no right minded Oscar Winners/nominates are going to get themselves into such a huge endeavor.

Not for nothing guys, but dont expect much from the movies. These things are too easy to be disappointed by when you have alot emotionally invested in them. Im assuming its going to be a horrible mess.

Thuorn, I would usually think a movie version of a favorite book would suck, too, but I had the hopeful precedent of how well done the LotR films were. I was hoping that folks like Ron Howard and Brian Glazer would be true to the work and vision of King and that they had the Hollywood chops to get a huge budget and do the thing right on all levels. I guess time will tell.

Good point. It might be best if they get a newcomer or relative unknown to play Roland, and then they could cast someone who looks like the character as described by King.

Big fan of the Dark Tower, me. I loved the ending, and agree with the others that said it was the only ending that worked. In contrast to many, I also thought the part where he wrote himself into the story was highly enjoyable. Firstly, because it's such a risk to do as a writer. And secondly, because of his reaction to seeing Roland. If I recall correctly, he legs it scared shitless. Now, I don't know about you guys, but if I ever ran into one of my characters, that is EXACTLY how I would react. High time I reread the series.
