RE:What are you reading?

Ooh then you can look forward to Last Argument of Kings; personally I found the second book less interesting than the first. But the third gave me the necessary faith in Joe. And by Best Served Cold I became a loyal fanboy. The Heroes is on pre-order. Oh, and I am still reading Toll the Hounds; before bedtime it's the paperback, but during the day when I am forced into boring situations (such as a seminar today) I also have the book on my android cell phone so I can continue there. Reading it with Kindle, which tells me I have now read 73% of the novel.

We're really on a Malazan binge aren't we. For the past year or so, that's why I thought the Malazan books deserved a board - so many here like them and/or read them..

I like the scope of what Erikson is doing, that's for sure. Considering the pace he's writing at, the length of his books, and the pace I read at, I doubt I'm going to catch up any time soon though! (and that's a feeling I quite like, being an ASOIAF fan and all...)

Yes, it's a wonderful feeling although I am soon having only two novels left. Still better than having eh nothing except for a half-baked Dunk & Egg novella and Not A Blog.

Reply to Oliveira8 (01/26/2011 7:04 AM) Yeah...so what is it? ^^ Right now I'm blazing through Joe Abrecombie's second book of his First Law trilogy and gotta say, it's vastly superior to The Blade Itself. TBI just managed to get a "It's nice" reaction from me, but half way through this one, and it's 100% awesome. Good news cause I had the same reaction. Still reading Stonewielder...

Abercrombie's writing skills definitely improve throughout the series. I have some issues with the second book in light of how it ends, but the third book is excellent. I'm reading Memories of Ice. The scope and sophistication of the Malazan setting is awesome. Beyond that, I'm somewhat ambivalent. I have to admit that the execution of some of the plot turns at the end of DG and the state in which some of the characters' storylines were left has me as yet uncommitted to reading the entire series. Reading Persepolis now. Has anyone seen the movie? I'm curious about how they adapted it; the book is very episodic.

You'll have to give us a review when your done Serkenneth. I love Abercrombie, but hopefully it will be better than BSC...I just found that book too dark and depressing. I love First Law though!

Will do. I really enjoyed Best Served Cold and in some ways even found it to be strangely uplifting. Dark as it was, it did say something about the futility of revenge which really hit home with me.

Apart from Midnight Tides and soon AFFC I started reading Story of O, which I quit after 20 pages, as well as... a Graham Greene book, cannot remember the name. Adding to that I started The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks last night and so far it is very interesting, if quite disturbing.

The Ring of Solomon by Jonathan Stroud. As aussiechris stated on the archive-thread, Bartimaeus is back to old form. At least in the second half of the book. Some of his 'definitions', e. g. 'A Good Project' had me in fits of giggles.

Once I knock over Lord Foul's Bane, seriously why is this thing considered a classic? Awful, awful book. I'm going to dive into the 3rd of Conn Iggulden's Conqueror series; Bones of the Hills. If you liked Cornwell and have read all of his work take a look at Iggulden. I can't speak for his Roman Emperor series, but the Conqueror books are good stuff, about Genghis Khan.

I'm working my way through re-reads of both Erikson and ASOIAF. Despite the welling anger at GRRM, I still enjoy the first three and I've only read AFFC once when it first came out. I want to go back through it and see for myself if it's as bad as I remember.
In between those I'm changing gears with Mike Carey's Felix Castor novels. They're urban fantasy, which isn't my usual thing, but I am really enjoying them.

The end of Toll the Hounds is in sight. I am seriously beginning to realize that this is my favorite in the series. The way Erikson weaves different techniques and styles - it is so experimental, there is so much depth to it at times. It has a little of everything that makes the series a great read. I've also started reading two other books inbetween, got them on my cellphone so I can read a little whenever there's a moment of possible boredom. But right now I am engrossed with the Malazan book of the fallen XIII, and already looking forward to continue the epic journey in the ninth volume. Wee!aaa

You better change that, Slynt, or fans are going to think you somehow got hold of a thirteenth book in the series.

Given how much I loved the Gap Cycle, I've always wanted to go back and read it again and see if I could find something in it, but thanks for talking me out of it!

I'm about halfway through the 2nd book of Patrick Kearneys Monarchies Of God series and I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. Why this series isn't as popular as it should be is a mystery to me as I'm liking these books every bit as much as ASOIAF and The First Law. Maybe the quality starts to slide in latter books but The Heretic Kings is even better than the first.

The Monarchies of God are pretty awesome, except for the last one. I read the omnibuses and therefore the last book is already the re-written version, but still it is lacking.
TheBloodyNine - I just read over in the 2011 thread, that you have gone through the Graveyard Book this year. What's your opinion on it? I'd love to read it ...

I thought it was a great little book, obviously it's aimed at a younger audience but I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the peculiar inhabitants of the graveyard and you can't help but feel for young Bod due the rather harrowing beginning, I would definitely recommend it.

Right now i'm waiting on a huge shipment of novels from Amazon, so i'm just re-reading some old books i found lying around. Lately i've been on a politics/philosophy kick: currently i'm juggling Edward Luttwak's Coup d'Etat: A Practical Handbook , Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State, and Utopia and World War Z by Max Brooks. If you haveen't read WWZ, i highly suggest you do. Funny as hell, yet somehow introspective. You know, for a book about the walking dead.
When i receive my Amazon shipment, i'll be reading The Crippled God, The Heroes, etc... But what i'm really looking forward too is Pierre Pavel's novels. Cardinal Richelieu and dragons? Sign me up.

Finished Toll the Hounds yesterday, delved straight into Dust of Dreams. But, as always, starting a new Malazan tale is a bit jarring as Erikson immediately throws new characters at me without much exposition. And I love it. The Heroes arrived today, and the dust jacket alone is worth the price. Also reading with Amazon kindle app on my cel phone, during downtimes, Elminster must Die! by Ed Greenwood (don't ask me why) and Sovereign, the author's name escaping me atm. Something like C.J. Random.

I am reading The Warded Man by Peter Brett. Splash blurb on the cover is from our good friend Terry Brooks, haha (speakmanese intentional).
First chapter in. Pretty good so far. Came very highly recommended by my brother who's read a lot more fantasy than I have.

I enjoyed The Cardinal's Blades. The swordplay scenes are superb. There's a lot of jumping back and forth between characters, but for the most part, it's easy to follow. I'll definitely continue the series.
However, if you're counting on a lot of dragon action, you may be disappointed. This novel is much more about the poltical intrigue and historical accuracy than the magic.
