After the overthrow of the Tsar in March 1917 the extended Romanov family were not in any immediate danger; the new Provisional Government were not overtly hostile and allowed them to live in relative, if supervised, comfort. However the subsequent overthrow of Kerensky's government by the Bolsheviks changed matters entirely. Initially unsure of what to do with the dozens of Romanovs it was decided in March 1918 to "collect" them together in a single area. Many escaped as they had fled south t...[More]

Shula, could you (or I) create a new World War I page so I can carry on with my day by day account of the war 100 years on. Once it's up I'll abandon the one on The History Page.

To be fair he could hardly accuse Putin of political interference when he was sitting next to him. But it was an odd one, it all boils down to his ego, he has to believe that he won the election fair and square, anything less is admitting defeat for the Great Ego. Once he gets back home he might do his usual trick of saying something entirely different in the hope that we won't notice another flip flop.

Shula, if Major doesn't want to be educated about the spread of Christianity in the outer regions of the British Isles 1400 years ago we can't force him. Nigel Tranter, who died in 2000, wrote many novels covering almost the entire spread of Scottish history from the 6th century onwards. His novel about Macbeth makes a refeshing change fom Shakespeare's version.

Former US intelligence chiefs expressed astonishment and condemnation Monday in response to President Donald Trump's comments at Monday's news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with former CIA Director John Brennan calling the US President's performance "nothing short of treasonous." Following his one-on-one meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, Trump declined to endorse the US intelligence community's assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 election over Putin's d...[More]

PB. you say you're a conservative but to be a conservative you have to be a republican. George 111 was a more committed republican than you.

Reply to PBA (07/16/2018 17:48 PM) Trump and Putin's meeting turned into a dog and pony show. Trump's lips most be sore from all his ass kissing. Putin has Trump rapped around his baby finger and Trump made the American people look like fools on the world stage. Against the advise of both sides of the aisle Trump should have canceled the meeting but instead decided to show up unprepared and blow it. For him to say a day before that the EU was a foe of America before he even mentioned Russia b...[More]

I've had a number of people, over the years, come to my house whilst I'm reading and say to me.... geezus, you read some pretty weird stuff and I thought, why the F are you on about but after listening to you two, I now know what they meant.

Being retired means that I have more than 15 minutes on any given day to read. I am currently reading a book about York England during the mid to late 14th century. This period is inclusive of the Black Death and other assorted horrors. The story takes place in York predominantly and I would like to know where this is in relation to where you (Mark and Major) live. John Thoresby is the Archbishop of York. The 1300's normally have not interested me but now I'm diving in.
