Welcome new members, introduce yourself!
(Date Posted:07/12/2009 11:08 PM)

Welcome to face the music.smiley27  Cheers! Please feel free to introduce yourself.

This is your new stress free zone!

There are no rules here, just a few suggestions...

When you come to this board and have in mind a certain song you want to post, I suggest you make sure that this is the version you want. You Tube will usually show you several versions, and the live versions can be the most fun to watch, as long as the quality is good. The concert or montages are what makes the You Tube versions special, and different from listening to your I-pod.

As far as the categories, they are mainly designed to help us all find the songs we are looking for, but don't worry about the accuracy- a lot of catagories overlap. If you don't mind, I might move it to another spot....

I am really looking forward to some new and different music!

Hi all,

Rose from UnitedstatesofAmerica suggested this board. I love music and will listen to most ...... but ROCK is by far my favorite. From the early Beatles and Stones to music just released (Mastodon, Delain, Silverstein......and also Brad Paisley's new one).

Oh good! I want more bands- feel free to start new threads as needed.

RE:Welcome new members, introduce yourself!

Upon extention of invitation, for which I thank you, here I am.

I admit I come into this with a little bias.

I taught music in the public screwl system for 25+ very successful years, but my career ended when I became the target of a bad principal who wanted me gone, and wanted her own people instead. Their loss. They have no idea what they did.

In addition to teaching, I am a concert pianist, and composer, and write commercial music. You probably have heard some of my stuff. For example;

This is a strophic melody (easily remembered- scale based) in thirds, that represents two medicines in combination, zetia and zocor, written for two violins because of their transparency in support of a very soft flute, and oboe. The pizzicato compliment with xylophone grace, and one bassoon, is comic, representative of the character actors. The detache bowed cellos are also comical. It's music to make you smile, and be a little funny. The Enlightenment orchestra matrix is for transparency, and appeal to a generally older audience, with a standard kit for contemporary movement. The idea here is for you to remember it after one hearing, and associate it with the cholesterol medicine, vytorin.

I am an Affiliate Artist, and trained at The Juilliard School of Music in New York. Additionally I studied composition extensively with M Castelnuovo Tedesco, who was also the principal composition teacher of my friend, film score composer John Williams.

My serious music, which I write in expression of the human condition, is mostly Classical in style. I love to write for the orchestra, because of the vast array of colors, but also write in exploration of synthesized and digitally produced sounds. Works from my collection called Prayers are sung as praise songs in churches.

Most of what I post here will be in the Classical category.

To distringuish true Classical music, written from 1720 to 1810, I use the word Jefferson, Mozart and Beethoven used; Enlightenment.

The musical background skin of this forum has a few unusual aspects. First is the #E instead of F for a key signature- something Bartok might have done. The absent meter suggests senza misura- cessation of time. Not sure if the first note is A or B, la with ti. A piece of it crosses the ti line. I try and get my students NOT to do that, but use just little dots that are accurate.

While the la - re pick up is nicely syncopated, the two eighth notes before the bar should be sixteeth notes (draw another beam), and that will make the syncopation sound better.  Technically this should be in the key of D, because the first note is the dominant, the second the tonic in D. Could be D major, minor, dorian, phrygian, mixolydian, lydian, or D blues. D is a cool key for blues, and should be used more- hasn't been used enough.

In the first full measure, there are 4 -1/2 beats in common time. Senza misura is OK, but in this case, the beat placement is confusing for an amateur to count. Additionally there are fudges in the dot placement, so uncertain which pitch is wanted. I assume the majority of the note location is the desired pitch.

The first full measure is very jumpy, does not rhythmically or melodically lead anywhere. If you play it, you will be disappointed.

The bar lines are too thick also.

On the right side, the eighth notes C B A, (do ti la) have a direction and shape, in a very sad Three Blind Mice. If we're in D, the notes should be #C B A, and indicate a dominant harmony at that spot, descending from the leading tone in a kind of tease. The next note after the A, should be G, which is the 7th of the dominant triad in D, and leans to #F, which is the third of the tonic triad, and produces a very pretty, nice, and calming resolution. I would mordent the G before resolving it to the I triad, and the #F in the melody. However, it also doesn't resolve anything in the haphazard-sounding first full measure.

I can answer just about any musical question you might have.

There is something about the design, probably the forum width, that makes the board move around a bit.
I have found that if you anchor it, by setting you board to full screen in the upper right hand of your computer monitor, the problem is solved.

Or, maybe the board is just dancing to the music! smiley87

Welcome ilove!

I am looking into this problem with the text flashing...Other than anchoring the board to full screen, I have no other suggestions. I am calling it to the attention of the Aimoo people, but it is the week end, so it might take time. I am also asking for help at the manager's board. Wish me luck!

I'm so sorry, for anyone who has this problem...It WILL be fixed!

Thanks for the invitation!  I see several names I recognize, so I'm confident I will feel "at home" here.

I live in the southern Ozarks of Northern Arkansas on 6 rural acres.  My taste in music is eclectic, I'd say.  Most of my CDs are "Big Band" or "Rock-n-Roll" (from 50's - 60's), but I have also enjoyed Pink Floyd (saw them in concert for "The Wall" on Long Island), some Country/Western music (mostly Vince Gill, Nancy Griffith, and Lee Ann Womack.)  I do enjoy some Classical (mostly Bach and Stravinsky,) and am looking forward to learning more about music so I can enjoy it more.

With teachers such as PikesPeak, how can I not???

Yea--got into this site easy enough.

Now, I will attempt to introduce myself.

My name is Helene and I live part time in Connecticut and, during the winter months, in Florida.
I love country music and real oldies.  Well, when I say real oldies, I mean in the 50's.
I love to play mar-jongg, go to concerts, writing, reading and more.  I belong to the seniors
as I am a senior.  They have loads of activities.

In Florida, I live in a 55 plus community and play shuffleboard, bingo, Tai-Chi, mar-jongg and more.
We go to many a flea market and loads of plays or concerts and several dinner/theaters.  Would love
to meet some of you.  Is there any one else from Connecticut or Florida?  My husband and I love to
meet people.

We go out to eat loads of times.  Now, tell me something about you.

I notice that this has a "reply" button as I posted earlier and I had no way to submit my response.

Hello!

I guess I have posted my musical tastes!

I feel like I was born in the most wonderful time to grow up- music from the 50's, Motown, music of the sixties and the seventies, and my personal gravitation to Folk music. I attended The Philadelphia Folk Festival when I could, and saw some Greats! My friends and I also attended small concerts at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. My favorite was Ry Cooder. In Philly I saw John Prine, Melanie, Jackson Browne.

I grew up in the town of Swarthmore, home to Swarthmore College, where my friends and I slipped in to concerts and plays put on there....one day we walked in on Pete Seeger giving an impromptu concert, Ravi Shankar, a lot of great film series- Fellini films, Inmar Bergman, Charlie Chaplin.

I live in Pennsylvania now, near Penn State, where a long time ago I had been a Fine Arts student. I have 2 daughters, grown up and moved out. I live with my doggie Mary Jane and kitties Sweet Pea, Lady and Patti.

I'm happy to make new friends on this board and learn new things about the ongoing world of music!

Thrilled that there have been so many replies and I therefore am getting to know a few people.

Evrs--so, you say you live in Pennsylvania, that is not too far from me.  From what you said, it sounds like you have a lovely family.  I also love the oldies, 50's music, and country. and MoTown.  I love doggies.  They are like a little kid.  I had two poodles---one after the other passed on.  They were a handful but I loved them.
Hope to get to know more about you in the long run.

I don't know if I mentioned this or not and maybe you already knew, but in my picture , I am with Chubby Checker.  It is a long story on how I got there but kind of interesting.

On to the very next post--sorry but I do not know your name but I see where you are from Connecticut also.  For all I know, you may be someone who I worked with in downtown Hartford.  I worked for the Hartford Times, Phoenix Mutual, and the latest job was the State of Connecticut, Comptrollers Department where I retired from.

I also live East of the River.

On to the next post---Indiana?  I know of some people from that area.  Tell me more please.

Hi Katie from Akron, Ohio.  Glad to meet you.  You have a variety of music tastes, that is good  The only other person I know that comes from Ohio, is my cousin, but he and his wife are from Cleveland.

Glad to meet you all.

I am thrilled that so many people introduced themselves and it definitely sounds like we have people from all over with varied interests.  I was so glad to meet every one of you.  It is so much more fun to hear about the different things that are of interest to people plus the different types of music.

The person from Queensland, Australia sounds very nice and would love to know more about your grand children and your children.  I am somewhat older then you but try to be young at heart.

Now, on to Ray.  I love dogs and understand that you have two of them.  I kind of miss my little toy poodles.  They were so precious to me like yours are to you. I spoke to my husband about you and mentioned that you had also worked for the State of Ct. as a programmer.  He couldn't get over this and felt that you may of heard about the programmers that I worked with.  One of the guys is retired now and my husband and I are friendly with he and his wife.

I also worked, for a short time, at the Hartford Steam Boiler and for a year and a half at Travelers. You say that you worked for Aetna and I wonder if it was in the building across from Bushnell Park.  I wonder about this because I worked for Comptrollers, Central Payroll which was located in 55 Elm after the Aetna moved out.

Great to meet you Wendy.  My name is Helene and I am from Connecticut.
You mention that your 2 daughters live in the U.S.A.  May I ask where?  The reason why I ask is because I love people and therefore, quite some time ago, started acquiring
pen pals that are located all around the globe.  Matter of fact, my latest pen pal is a
lovely girl named Teena and she lives in Australia.  Since I am not that familiar with Australia
, I am not sure how far it is from you.  I believe, but not certain, that she is either in her late 20's or early 30's.  I only know that she is a lot younger then me because she once mentioned it when her birthday
came up.

I also got to be quite friendly with Lisa who lives in England.  She used to work in the states, years ago,
and I got to be very friendly with her.

It definitely sounds like you have a lovely family and come Thanksgiving, there must be a crowd to celebrate.  I think that is absolutely lovely.

Going back to Teena, she is so cute as someday she feels that she may pay a visit to the states and thereby get to see me.  That would be so nice.   I look forward to it but knowing how far she is from Connecticut, I have my doubts.  Teena has another pen pal and it is one that I write to also and this other person lives in Missouri so Teena hopes to not only meet me but this other girl also, but Missouri is several thousand miles from Connecticut.  But, I didn't want to burst Teena's bubble by saying that so I just said, "We'll see."

I have lots of activities but mostly I enjoy, with my husband of 46 years, going to concerts.  I mostly prefer country music but I love the 50's type music also.

A few years back Marty (my husband) along with my cousin, my girlfriend and me went to a Chubby Checkers concert (don't know if you heard of him) (best known for his song-"The Twist) and we had a great time.  I got to dance The Twist with Chubby and he told me that I had some moves.  Later a picture was taken with Chubby and me.  (that is what my picture is)

Hey Friendly!

What a thrill, meeting Chubby Checkers...I remember how we were all worried about him during Katrina. He played an important part in our musical heritage.

Just a note to everyone- if you check "who's on" and it shows that I am on, I usually do keep myself signed in but I may be out walking Mary Jane (my doggie) or doing housework (yeah, right), and I just peep in or post something that comes to mind. In other words, if I don't respond to something, don't think I am ignoring you- I am probably not there!

As a rule, I don't bother people when they are on the board because I wouldn't want to interrupt anyone's listening.....on the other hand, PLEASE feel free to send a private message to me, I have the bell set, and will answer ASAP!

Welcome Mariane from Nova Scotia! It must be so beautiful up there.

I'm thinking about beautiful yarn...I've always wanted to go up there on the Scotia Prince and fill my arms with yarn! I used to watch the ship come and go from the pier in Portland, Maine!

I'm so glad to have someone who can add to the mix in the country music area. I love all the traditional bluegrass and early roots of country music, but my knowledge is limited.

Thanks, Evrstrong.  I don't know what I did to earn an upgrade to my account here as I learned in the email this morning.  Hope it doesn't entail any major brain usage.   My brain blew up back in 1996 (ruptured cerebral aneurysm) and hasn't worked right since!

I don't listen to the radio like I did when I was a teen and young adult, so I'm not "up" on the new singers/bands that are recording these days, but I saw a newsclip about Wilco the other day, and now I'm a fan.

I'm also a HUGE fan of RyanDan - identical twins with angels' voices.  You can check them out on YouTube at their Channel ryandanofficial.  Their "Like The Sun" is awesome (filmed in South America at an art museum that looks like an alien spaceship,) and their "High" should be the new American Mantra.  ("If we all work together, we would be stronger.  If we all open our eyes, we could see further.  If we all stand tall enough, no one can beat us.  If we all hold our hands up high, we can carry the world!")  Check them out:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd8ipEH8JXE

Well it's already early Tuesday morning (1:30 am East Coast time) but I am a night owl, and I can often be found on here late at night. I have so many international members please don't expect me to know what time it is there because I have a hard enough time figuring out the US!

Hey, Gryphon, I checked our RyanDan and they were very nice! Maybe you could post more of them in the Worship category, under the thread "Spiritual in Nature."  Their music is very spiritual and uplifting.

Your Jimi Hendrix signature is great, by the way.

It took me 3 1/2 hours to go to the grocery store and back by bus today. My car is in the shop, and they say it will need close to $1,000.00 worth of work! Auugh!

I must go listen to some happy music. And eat chocolate. smiley36

I worked at Hartford Steam Boiler as a contractor for 18 months leading up to Y2K. I worked in main north at Travelers in the early 80's. I worked at the Middletown Aetna building. I was a DBA for the state in the 90's and knew a few people at CATER.

Boy, what several days away at Lake George will do.  I see, on the board, that there have
been several more postings.  I do not know if they are new or if I just got to meet them.
In either event, a welcome goes out to 3M's, Nurselady and Marianne and any one else that
I neglected to welcome.  Glad to see additions.

Later on in the day, when I have more time, I will go over the "introduce yourself" board
and see who I forgot.  I am sure I did.

But, since we just got home, there is much work to be done after a trip.
We did have fun and went on a 2 1/2 hour boat ride .  The weather held out.
More about the trip later.

Hey guys, lovely to see everyone.

It's the end of winter here in Sydney, Australia.  Early spring is here and have been told that we are in for an unusually warm spring and very dry.  Oh just great, I can see us having water restrictions again; total pain in the butt lmao.smiley128

Hope everyone has a great day and look forward to a great weekend.

Wendy, I would love to post some pictures if I am able to post them.   I will try
but, don't count on it as I usually have trouble posting pictures.  I will try though.

Good Morning Everyone!
Hey Friendly, glad you had such a nice trip! Send me a pm if you need help posting the photos...
You can use photobucket or images. I purchased the Diamond program immediately because I love being able to post pictures!
You can also post photos in the photo section just under the big "face the music" title...

Hello everyone!

It is Saturday night and it appears that two of my favorite posters are on- ilovenature5 and PikesPeak! If you read this, I hope you realise I don't speak because I don't as a policy interrupt people when they are most likely listening to music!

But as I have said before, please feel free to send me a pm if you have a question or want to say HI!

PBS is doing a show on The Doors right now...another group I hadn't thought of yet!

I wanted to tell everyone to be sure to visit the Classical music section for some wonderful music AND photography by Pikes Peak and his son. Thank you Pikes, for the wonderful contribution! Such talent and beautiful music, and to be able to apply it to a You Tube video....nice!

Another young talent, Katie, also known as FlattsFan4life put up the Rascal Flatts song "Why" on You Tube to some photos that go very nicely with the song's lyrics. I posted it on the Rascal Flatts thread. Good job Katie!

Hello Friendly, when you get here, check it out!

I posted Chubby Checkers doing the Twist in 1960! I couldn't help myself, I got up and started dancing!
The video is in the Oldies but Goodies section, in the thread called "SHOUT!"

Hi EVrs

I did find the spot where you posted the video of Chubby Checker.
It was great and I for one thoroughly enjoyed it.
As I mentioned on the site, I do not know how you or any of the
others do this, but everyone is doing a fantastic job.

Are these videos that you took or are you able to get them?
Would love to know how you acquire such information and videos.

Here are the instructions I posted before. Have you tried to follow these? If so, let me know where you get stumped. I want to make the directions as clear as possible...

As far as posting a video, it's not hard at all. After you hit post reply and have the empty box ready to write in, you can go across the (top rowof the) box of choices, such as font, color, etc... and the second row in the middle has a little icon that says You Tube.

You click on that icon, and a box appears in the upper left of the screen, which has six You Tube choices on it. Ignore those. There is a search box above them, where you can write in what you are looking for. Usually start with the name of the group or singer, and then the name of the song....Say, for example: The Four Tops - Bernadette.... Then hit the search button and six choices will come up, and you click on the one you want. That choice will move to the reply box, and your You Tube will be posted, after you hit Reply!

Good Morning! It is a beautiful Saturday morning in Happy Valley, PA. Today will bring the first Penn State football home game. I live on Rte 322, the road going in and out of town, and after the game the traffic leaves town at a slow crawl, for at leasr four hours! This is the view outside my window, taken last fall:

Now, just imagine it with cars travelling inch by inch...at least they have a pretty view!

I have taken it upon myself to do a rather ambitious project. I have started doing a complete catalog of the Beatles music. So far, it has been really fun. There are songs that I actually had forgotten- and I am a die hard Beatles fan! I hope you all enjoy it too!

Have a good week end people...Hope you all have good weather too! smiley62

If the dates and references on this thread seem mixed up, you are right.

I decided to merge two threads together. So the chit chat thread is no more, and we will just continue our conversation on this welcome thread, as we had been doing. I decided it was less confusing, and there is no reason we can't keep this thread going on and on forever!

Sounds like fun to me!  smiley79smiley86smiley87smiley67smiley38

Hi guys! Good to see everyone getting to know each other...

It's all of you that are making it an awesome place...Thanks Lovey!

I'm going to work on some new ideas to make posting easier, and I am open to any suggestions. Please do not hesitate! There are so many types, or genres of music, it gets confusing...I hope I can make it more clear. Of course a lot of songs fit more than one category, so that's not a problem...I just hate to think that anyone may be shy about posting a song because they are not sure where to put it! Anywhere is fine!

Hello All!

I've made some changes I hope everyone will like.

Hip Hop and R&B now has it's own site - it seemed fitting with the return of Whitney Houston and all the great R&B singers on the scene!

I also added a category for members to make their own threads of their favorites. I hope many of you will try this. It's fun to do, and you can mix it up - songs from all types of genres - whatever you like.

Other changes speak for themselves; I started an Eagles thread, but we still haven't added Bruce, Elvis, Elton, Simon and Garfunkel, C, S, N & Y, Joni Mitchell and many others, including the newer stuff. I need help!

Hi, Thanks for the invite. I am just getting around to looking around the boards. I love the set up. I am an avid Country music fan. And love most versions of it, but preferably the new stuff now. I do however love the southern rock or southern country such as Lynerd Skynerd, AC/DC, and Steppen' Wolf. I hope to be able to contribute to the site.

Thanks again for the invite.

I have been looking at member profiles to see music preferences, and I see that there are still many musicians and types of music that need to be covered here at face the music!

Of course I knew that, and when I'm driving in my car (I have a fantastic stereo system) I get so many ideas, I have to keep a notebook beside me and jot down ideas! In fact, you wouldn't believe the pages and pages of songs I have yet to post on the board....

But I'm only one person, and I sure could use some help...Every time one of you posts a video, I get sooo happy, I'm not kidding, that's what I really want, and I don't care if it's not posted in the right category or whatever....no worries!

I hope you have hours of listening pleasure!

Hello all,
My name is Lynn Jacobs (check out my page to see who I am).

I love this site.

Music is a universal language and broadens the mind, opens the heart and speaks more than English, French, German, etc.

THIS SITE ABSOLUTELY ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF.

So much information, so much good music.

Music is my life, my passion and my soul.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who hangs out here (FACE THE MUSIC).

I just wanted to insert a note here to let everyone know here that in cases where a video has been "removed by user" I will try to replace it with another version of the same song, which is why you will see the "edited by evrstrong" message.

In some cases, I will not be able to tell what the song is, and cannot replace it. Therefore, I will delete the post. I hate when that happens!

To anyone who wonders what happened to their signature, don't worry!

Your signature will show anywhere else you go, just not here!

I opted not to show them on face the music, because they are distracting from the music....the same reason I took away user rank.

I hope you don't mind. If anyone has a great objection, I am certainly open to reconsidering...

Just a few other notes!

I checked out Google, and we have moved up from deep in the weeds, on page 33, and moved up to page 16! Slow progress, but maybe in a few more months they will have 'face the music' - just those three words - show up on page one. bing has had us on page one for quite a while...

Also in just the last three months, our viewership has more than doubled. I subscribe to Google Analytics, and watch the trends.

A lot of my time on the board is spent on maintenance; fixing videos that have been "removed by user" and making the board look nice.

Here are a few new smilies:

I hope you use these and have fun!
