Starting off with a small illumination of the American National Anthem.

Do you know what you're singing?

The Star Spangled Banner came from a poem written byu Francis Scott Key after watching the British bomb Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. The lyrics were set to the tune of Anacreon in Heaven, written by John Stafford Smith, a drinking song from a secretively Gay English fraternity.

That is correct. The Star Spangled Banner is a Gay drinking song.

Here is what it might have sounded like originally

Here are other renditions, each a little different:

The original lyrics are these:

1
          To ANACREON in Heav'n, where he sat in full Glee,
          A few Sons of Harmony sent a Petition,
          That He their Inspirer and Patron wou'd be;
          When this Answer arriv'd from the JOLLY OLD GRECIAN
                        "Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
                        "No longer be mute,
         "I'll lend you my Name and inspire you to boot,
         "And, besides, I'll instruct you like me, to intwine
         "The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS's Vine.

                                                    2
          The news through OLYMPUS immediately flew;
          When OLD THUNDER pretended to give himself Airs_
          If these Mortals are suffer'd their Scheme to pursue,
          The Devil a Goddess will stay above Stairs.
                            "Hark! already they cry,
                            "In Transports of Joy
         "Away to the Sons of ANACREON we'll fly,
         "And there, with good Fellows, we'll learn to intwine
         "The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

                                                    3
         "The YELLOW-HAIR'D GOD and his nine fusty Maids
         "From HELICON'S Banks will incontinent flee,
         "IDALIA will boast but of tenantless Shades,
         "And the bi-forked Hill a mere Desart will be
                      "My Thunder, no fear on't,
                      "Shall soon do it's Errand,
         "And, dam'me! I'll swinge the Ringleaders I warrant,
         "I'll trim the young Dogs, for thus daring to twine
         "The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

                                                    4
          APOLLO rose up; and said, "Pr'ythee ne'er quarrel,
         "Good King of the Gods with my Vot'ries below:
         "Your Thunder is useless_then, shewing his Laurel,
          Cry'd. "Sic evitabile fulmen, you know!
                      "Then over each Head
                      "My Laurels I'll spread
         "So my Sons from your Crackers no Mischief shall dread,
         "Whilst snug in their Club-Room, they Jovially twine
         "The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

                                                    5
          Next MOMUS got up, with his risible Phiz,
          And swore with APOLLO he'd cheerfull join_
         "The full Tide of Harmony still shall be his,
         "But the Song, and the Catch, & the Laugh shall bemine
                     "Then, JOVE, be not jealous
                      Of these honest Fellows,
          Cry'd JOVE, "We relent, since the Truth you now tell us;
         "And swear, by OLD STYX, that they long shall entwine
         "The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

                                                    6
          Ye Sons of ANACREON, then, join Hand in Hand;
          Preserve Unanimity, Friendship, and Love!
         'Tis your's to support what's so happily plann'd;
          You've the Sanction of Gods, and the FIAT of JOVE.
                          While thus we agree
                          Our Toast let it be.
          May our Club flourish happy, united and free!
          And long may the Sons of ANACREON intwine
          The Myrtle of VENUS with BACCHUS'S Vine.

It was not adopted as the official US National Anthem until presidentially proposed in 1916 and adopted by Congress in 1931. The proposal was due to the United States not having a national anthem to be played when American athletes won a gold medal in the Olympic Games, in contrast to European athlete gold medal winners.

When I hear the Star Spangled Banner played, and see crowds of American patriots, athletes and servicemen standing, hand over heart singing this, it brings a tear to my eye. But it is the homophobe crowd who brings the most tears. Inside I am torn up with rolling on the floor laughter because not a single one of them has a clue about what he is singing!

Actually I did know the tune was an English drinking song.  I just never had seen or heard the words to that song.

By the way, has anyone seen or heard from Pike's lately.  I miss his posts immensely.

Yes, actually, he said he was very busy with music rehearsals this month- but he posted two beautiful pieces of music on May 7th. You can find them here:

Thanks for the info on Pikes.  I miss his music, but also miss his thoughtful and insightful posts on various political and social issues on a couple of the political boards.

OK, I think I will post a few national anthems.  Some of the home countries of several posters from a couple of AIMOO boards I belong to.  and then one or two anthems I just happen to like, primarily because of the music.  One such anthem is the National Anthem of Denmark, a beautiful little tune that is quite appropriate for this fairy tale little country that forms both the geographic and cultural bridges between northern Europe and Scandinavia.

The "other" anthem that maintains a special place in my own heart  - Fratelli d'Italia.  I don't know what it is about Italy, a country that gave the world the renaisssance, with its art, music and literature and a 2,000 year long history, yet just never has seemed able to get our act together as a modern nation.  But, through it all has remained a nationa blessed with a people whose joy and love of country remains unbounded.  And I believe this version of the anthem performed by crazy Andre Rieu and his even crazier orchestra provides a perfect context for that joy and exhuberance of the people as demonstrated by the audience.

What can I say -- the French gave us great brandy, Brigitte Bardot, and the ultimate blood pumping anthem, La Marseillaise.  Contrary to my what my father preached all his life, the French really are good for something.  Even if their language is the most impossible of the Romance languages.  ;-)

With apologies to my friend Joe who actually hates God Save the Queen as an anthem, here it is.

Like Canada, Australia has abandoned God Save the Queen for something a bit more appropriate.  Advance Australia Fair/

I watched the movie "Invictus" the other night and I couldn't make heads or tails of the national anthem of South Africa when they were singing it at their famous rugby game...so here it is:

While Scotland is no longer an independent country, it has always safeguarded its rugged individualism.  So as a tribute to indomitable Scottish spirit, here is the "unofficial" national anthem of Scotland - Scotland the Brave".  First tje traditional instrumental version with the wailing pipes and drums.  Then the vocal version.

And for those stubborn Texans who refuse to recognize the US Annexation of the Republic of Texas in 1846.  And yes, they ARE out there.
