There seems to be a little confusion about the financing of our venue here! Boopers gave a nice summary in another thread, but since people have asked, I will try to make it clear.

There are actually two separate venues here, the website and the forum, though the forum is "nested" within the website, so to speak.

www.divingbellpub.com is the actual website, from which you can access various information, the game shop, and the forums. I pay for hosting bandwidth for it separately from the forums. I'm hosted with GoDaddy and use their website builder, Website Tonight, which is included in the hosting fees. (God forbid I should have to figure out how to do a site from scratch! I barely have the patience to work through all the details with WT as it is, LOL!)

www.divingbell.aimoo.com (not a link, it is where you are now!) is the forum site. Aimoo is a forum host based somewhere in China - Shanghai or Hong Kong, I think. They offer forum hosting at two levels, regular and diamond. Regular hosting is free, but you have to tolerate other people's banner/pop ads, and there is no chat, and no image hosting - i.e. can't put pics in threads or in the photo albums. Aimoo charges by the page hit, and you buy 150,000 hits for $35. That is supposed to be around 6 months for an average forum. Ours is picking up, and I'm thinking that will be closer to 5 months.

The donation button at the top of the page is for Aimoo forum hosting. We have about 8-10 months hosting in the war chest at present, thanks to some generous donors. You can see who has donated by the little "wreath" above their name in the threads.

The website hosting is what is supported by purchases in the Dive Shop - which will shortly offer books as well as games! If you want a game that is not in the shop, you can go to Alawar's full game catalog by clicking on the Alawar button at the bottom of the page in the Dive Shop. All purchases made either in the Dive Shop or through the link will be credited to the Pub.

Alawar has decent customer service in my experience, but their timing is odd, since they are in Russia. If you are having a lot of technical problems with your computer, do download and play the demo before you buy, just to save yourself trouble. (That goes for all portals! Currently, I'm having more trouble with BFG than any.)

The first game you buy at Alawar will be $9.95. Any further games you purchase will be at $6.95 for the next 90 days. Also, when you sign up there (there is no monthly charge - you buy games only when you want to), you can sign up for their beta program. They currently have a TM in beta. If you beta test a game for them, and do the survey, they will send you a coupon for 45% off if you want to buy the game, which is right at $5.50, so it is a savings.

Alawar does have a game manager, GameBox, but as far as I can tell, it is still optional. GameBox users can download a free game every month (ala SandLot), and this month's game is Mahjongg Artifacts. You do not have to buy anything to download GameBox and get the free game, BTW.

I'm so grateful for this wonderful Pub.  It's been a while since I donated.  It was the first day it opened, I think.  So, I think another donation is due.  I want to do whatever I can to keep Phatkhat from having to use her pocketbook here.  She does enough for us using her brain.  Phatkhat, can we help you with the cost of the website, too?  Is there any way to get a little cash to you to help with the cost?

What AP said.  Khat, just tell us when the coffers lean towards empty, OK? A PM is fine, or whatever venue suits you best.

I will let you all know when the forum coffers run low, but in the meantime, just shop at the dive shop! When I go to town again, I am going to get a separate bank account for the Pub (since I'm retired, it's free, LOL), for the Amazon commissions. (I may set up a PayPal thing, too, for donations. We'll see how the affiliate things go.) That will let me debit that account instead of my personal one for the monthly web hosting fees. smiley66

That sounds like an excellent idea, Khat.  However, there was a post regarding PayPal that really has me jittery.  I've always felt so safe with them.  But it would probably be a good idea to keep a separate account just in case the IRS wants to know where all the extra bucks are coming from.  HA!

I've been using PayPal since it was X.com way back when. I never had a problem with them until this year. I got my account frozen as part of some audit they were doing. Oh, boy, I had about $3 in it, LOL. But I sold a pin on eBay, and the payment wouldn't go through.  It was fixed in about a week, and my buyer was patient (I offered her the option of paying by check), so no biggie.

As far as the IRS, I have a tax id for my jewelry business, so I can use that business DBA The Diving Bell Pub, and thereby stay on the up and up with the government busybodies. God forbid somebody should have a website that makes a buck or two, but the zillionaires can merrily cheat away. smiley36

A paypal account is a good idea.

I cancelled my paypal account when I banned myself from ebay!  lol Drastic measures had to be taken.

edit: just to clarify - nothing wrong with ebay or paypal, good experiences with both - too good -  much too good for an obsessive compulsive shopaholic smiley48

Personal effort/time/expertise deserves support - financial if you can give it - or by words - hey I donated but have been rewarded by answers on my computer crash-reinstalling problem - what goes around - comes around and all that!  smiley30

smiley86 A toast to two more Forum supporters, and a big to those who have continued to support us by both direct contributions and purchases at the Dive Shop!

  GeezingBarb........          .
  oregonpandora...........

This forum opened on 4/21/2010, and we recently surpassed a quarter of a million page hits! We are one member short of 150, but most of our members are active readers, even if they don't post much - or at all! We have now purchased, thanks  to the generosity of those featured here, enough page hits to keep us in business for about another 1 to 1-1/2 years at our current rate.

There will be a button for direct donations to the Website this week, as soon as PayPal clears us. I will be shopping for some web editing software so that we can revamp the site and have a better "look" and "feel". I am using a basic PNP site builder now, but it has no flexibility, and I am not happy with the technical glitches I am running into, either. It was okay to get us launched, but I see that this enterprise is viable, now, and it deserves a much better home!

So give yourselves all a big round of applause whether you can donate or not, because without your participation, we would not be here today!

Khat, when you say "direct contributions" do you mean through Aimoo?  I wasn't sure how much of our donation went towards OUR part of Aimoo.  If it's substantial, I would like to donate again.  Just not sure if I should wait for the PayPal to get set up.  I think that might put more of my donation where I would like it to be.  Any thoughts on this?

Yes, I am referring to direct contributions made through the donate button to Aimoo for the forums. Indirect contributions are the purchases you make at the Dive Shop. We do not need more money donated to Aimoo at the moment, since we probably have enough for the next year, unless we get really big, LOL.

We have about $100 in our affiliate accounts, about 75% Alawar and 25% Amazon.

Khat, when you say "really big" does that mean the number of members or the number of posts?  I think that a quarter million posts is "really big", but maybe in forum terms, it's not.  HA!

RE:Financing the Pub - Just to clarify...

Not a quarter million posts! Only page hits, which means when people read a page. It also does include a percentage of hits by bots, but those can be helpful, since they gather keywords that make us appear in search engines. Searching for game names that we have discussed will bring us up, which is good!

"Really Big" is relative, but we are a fairly small group as yet. Really big might see a hundred or more people online at one time. We usually don't have more than 10-15 on at any given moment. That's okay, though. Slow growth is very good. Too rapid growth can be hard to manage.

I'm sure Khat will be happy to get a part-time job to support us, Sam.

Kidding, kidding, sometimes I just can't help myself!

I know!  We'll have a play in the big ol' barn out back and sell tickets.  *No, wait a minute, that's an old Rooney and Garland movie I saw recently on AMC.*

Sigh.....well, I'm out of ideas.

The play is a great idea, Sable!  But I refuse to  be the Andy Rooney character!  (Sigh...It just dawned on me that all the younguns probably don't know who Andy Rooney is.  I must admit, I thought those " let's put on a play" movies were awful, LOL

Lol, they were even more than awful, OP.

I now think they've slid into the "hysterically funny" niche of movies.

Had myself some good old rollicking laughs - they were so earnest and sincere!

For me, they act as an instant lift to the spirits.  Who can be down when laughing so hard?

Btw, saw your post about Easter dinner.  One word:

Yum!
