Artist Colony -- Based on 1 hour demo

In this game you are re-building a defunct artist's compound where people can train in painting, music, sculpting, dance, photography, etc. The goal of the game is to restore all of the studios, clear all the debris, rebuild anything that needs it and above all, create masterpieces for guests to purchase.

Before you can train, you have to clear debris, then rebuild the studio(s). When people get tired, they need to rest on a bench or sleep. When they get hungry, they'll eat at the kitchen. The problem is that when they get uninspired, they get depressed, and when they're depressed, they won't do anything at all.

This game would be a lot more fun if it wasn't so hard to inspire our little artists, but alas, it's very difficult. Sources of inspiration will show up now and then, such as beautiful flowers, or you can (barely) manage to raise the level by having them view something pretty like a pond or flower garden. Sometimes they will think about someone of the opposite sex, and if you put the people together, sometimes they will fall in love. And sometimes not. The person with the original thoughts tends to get depressed at this point, but putting them near the person they're thinking about might help.

Your artists move pretty slowly, which helps to keep track of them all, but it's rather annoyingly slow when you only have two people to manage.

My impression: Too slow, too hard to keep people inspired, and hence, not as fun as it could have been.

DISCLAIMER:  I think I had been spoiled by Gemini Lost when I tried this game.  I'm going to try Artist Colony again and see how I feel smiley14

I finished the game and have to say the slow pace changes a little once your colony thrieves and you have to manage more people. It's still a game that will drag along for quite a while as most main quests of restoring the colony take a long time (you often have to make a lot of money and artists can create only one masterpiece per level - and only masterpieces can be sold).

The game is not bad, but it's something for patient players.

Thank you for posting that review Genki - you have confirmed my lack of motivation and altogether lack of interest in this game!  Now I don't have to suffer giving it another go!!!  smiley43smiley68

Well- I have to go against the flow.  I love this game so much bought it twice LOL   I played it 3 times in a row when I first go it.

It is actually very easy to inspire the Artists, they are inspired by the fountain, the rock mural, browsing others paintings in the art gallery- you can pick them up and just place them there if need be.  Fishing is a fast refresher-  the AI of this game is actually extremely good for a casual game and most tasks the Artists will do by themselves- but easy enough to hurry things along-  there are 3 levels of speed for the game-  and placing all the Artists where you need them to be yourself makes things go very smoothly and efficiently.

It is probably one of those games you need to play more than the demo to appreciate all the elements and just how cleverly done this game is for it's genre.

Well, I liked the game when I played it, Gove, it's just that there are some things I'd have liked different. Overall, Artist Colony is not a bad game, far from it. As you have pointed out, the artists are pretty clever and once you've finished a few tasks, the game is easy enough to play.
I would have liked the artists to be able to make more masterpieces, so I could gather money a bit faster.
