For any of those darling Belles out there who are interested... I've thoroughly compared RMXP to RMVX and... I purchased VX. It's SOOO much more user friendly, although there are WAY less sprites and character images, so for game development, I think generic images are pretty much out of the question. However, I am working on a mini game (like Bookworm's for RMXP), so you can kind of see the difference.

I'd actually rather have less user friendly environment and more sprites and other basic content, which is why I chose the XP version. I can work with the less-than-ideal ways of working with the program. Still, that's rather down to taste, a lot of people will be more happy with the VX, I think.

Had I not had a rigorous training in programming at school, I might be among them, too. I'm better at learning about programming and getting to workarounds for problems than at creating new graphics for a game, so I prefer more graphics to more comfort.

Still, Kali, I'd love to see your game and compare the possibilities.

Heh. In terms of user friendly, I meant it's organized better. For the events, they're laid out more logically, and rather than under Map Properties, having to select a type of map, you get everything. I'll post screen shots to explain. The layering system's different too. Very cool contrasts.

I was disappointed with the lack of basic sprites, but I've found a few custom sprite generators that will solve that problem nicely. The programming system is basically the same, I just prefer the layout. :)

The Game
(Date Posted:09/06/2010 15:57)

No working title as of yet, and there's an interesting ending to it... Took DH about 20 mins from start to finish (he battled everything though). Just to compare / contrast VX and XP. :)

The download is here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/i9uu0pboa3v7d1q/Mini%20RPG.exe

I've included RTPVX, so the file may take a bit longer to download than it typically would. :)

A warning: Media Fire will throw up a pop-up, which you'll want to exit out of (irritating, but it's the only site I've found that doesn't make you wait)

I clicked New Game and nothing happened.  I had downloaded the VX run time package the other day and that is in my common files.

Okies. Here's the link with no RTP on it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/3798mpm9smmndff/Mini%20RPG.exe

For this, you'll need to make sure you have RTP VX ((RTP XP, which was used for Bookworm's won't work)).

The link for that is:

Re:RPG Maker VX

Downloading it now. I will definitely be back for a review.

The layout does seem a bit more logical to me, but I don't think I will switch. First of all because of the money, but also because I just got used to the way things work in the XP version. Some day in the future, maybe...

EDIT: I played the game through already (but then, I avoided most fights and only went to one location besides the village - I'll be back for more testing, that much is for sure).
You really handled everything quite well here, the characters, the fights (I like being able to see ... and perhaps avoid ... my enemies) and the cutscenes. Like me, you don't have a quest book yet, but we can both learn to do this (plus, it's hardly necessary for a short game). I'm really interested whether or not you're going to expand this game or create a completely new one next.

EDIT 2: Checked the program and got myself the 30 day trial for now. It's really much easier to work with than XP, although I'd love to get the VX with as many graphics as the XP (but maybe there's a way to add the old graphics...). I will experiment a while with it ... maybe I'll make another shorter game with it.

Also found a link to a free game made with it that's more adventure than RPG. Check this forum entry (you don't have to log in, I'm not registered in that forum, either) and just follow the link. If you don't have the VX RTR already, just download through the link above.

Daww, thanks. :D I think I've found the scripting for a logbook. I will try it and let you know, as it *looks* like it would be the same for both programs. I also found one for defaulting the program to full-screen ((the half screen bothers me)), testing both to make sure they don't cause any bugs. :)

Seriously considering expanding this one... I started it planning only to do a quickie just to see the differences between the two engines and now my head's full of ideas, lol.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to do this, I've seen chatter that people have converted graphics, but it might take some finagling. From what I've read, it looks like the sprites are a slightly different pixel size in VX than XP.

Also found a link to a free game made with it that's more adventure than RPG. Check this forum entry (you don't have to log in, I'm not registered in that forum, either) and just follow the link. If you don't have the VX RTR already, just download through the link above.

I'm downloading the game now, it'll be interesting to see what others have done with these engines. It amazes me just how flexible they are.

The game actually has three main ending which also differ slightly, depending on what you did or did not. I have replayed it various times yesterday to check out what to do for the different endings, so if you need any help (some puzzles aren't all that logical and the walkthrough that comes with the package doesn't give any passwords or suchlike), just contact me.

Just a tip: for best ending, three people have to survive and you have to do a lot more than the walkthrough states.

Kali, have you checked the game by now? I'm working on a little game myself, trying to make something with my own items and without fights (for now, have created a new main character for it).

RE:RPG Maker VX

I found an interesting tutorial game in the forum I mentioned above. It's not just a game made to try things out (like mine for the RPG Maker XP), but a game that explains how various events work. The game file is not locked, so you can look at how the various events really work.

The bad side about it is that you can only enter the tutorial section of the forum when you're registered. I did register (for other reasons, though) and thus have no problem getting the game. I'll publish the link to the forum thread here, but I guess you will have to register (it's free, though) to get in there.

I am adding this here, because it's part of the RPG Maker VX and I don't really know where else to put it.

During my recent experiments with the Lair, I learned that the script for variable handling is buggy. It didn't allow me do multiply or divide variables correctly. A corrected script can be found here, with instructions how to exchange it. It's not difficult and with those instructions you only have to do it once (then it will work for all future projects, you might have to copy the file into existing projects, though).

Yes, there's a lot of interesting games done with the RPG Maker on this site. I downloaded and checked a few myself ever since I started working with the program.

Updated Experimental Lair. Be sure to visit the Archives ... no books, but another experiment.

Don't worry, I'm also working on the Diving Bell Adventure, but I had to try a few things out first.

I'm soon going to post some news about the Adventure, too.

EDIT: edited to remove the file link. As I'm uploading the possibly last build of the Lair (for the time being, at least), I have removed the other files from my RapidShare account.

The elevator was cool.  I also liked how you included a quest journal, but when I said to open it, it didn't open up.  You have learned a lot.

Actually, I yesterday kicked my home-made journal and installed a journal script that works quite well. It wasn't in the new build, because I found it after I'd put the new one up. The journal in this version will only open after you've taken on the first quest, I guess. Talk to the guy on third floor again and take on the quest ... it's easy anyway.

Ahem ... meaning I'm making a lot of improvements now that I've already put a new version out. Maybe I'll do a new build today or tomorrow.

(I'm kicking out posts here like no tomorrow right now ... phew!)

I will definitely put up a new build tomorrow, so if you want to see the new Experimental Lair and haven't downloaded the last build yet, just wait a few more hours.

I have been working on the third floor today, am about to create the last quest (or maybe the next to last), have implemented the scripted journal. By tomorrow I hope it's all done, then I'll present the Lair how it is then (and probably will stay for a while).

RE:RPG Maker VX
(Date Posted:12/07/2010 07:48)

This might be the final build of the Experimental Lair, now. I think I'm finished with it, so if you don't find any really shameful errors (beta-tested it myself, but you never know...), I won't change anything else about it soon ... I'll concentrate on the Diving Bell Adventure instead. A few remarks, though.

  • I have implemented a scripted journal, just go to the menu and choose 'Journal.' (It will only show a quest once you have one, there's some on the third floor.)
  • The journal graphics aren't mine (only the 'instructions' graphics and they're far from a finished product), I will rework them for the Diving Bell Adventure, but I won't change them for this game.
  • The last quest, the ??? one, is a little example of what the Diving Bell Adventure might look like, so if you really hate it, please tell me, so I can change things while still at the beginning.
  • I know my message (found/received stuff) aren't continuous, some are missing (especially in the first quest), but you can see which objects you have - every object you're given is really in you inventory. I will be more careful in my next project.

That's it, so the only thing left is to give you the link.

Experimental Lair

Remember: just click 'No' if you're asked to get RapidShare Pro!

If a window comes up that tells you to register for the professional version, just click on 'No.' Click on 'Download' on the right side (the white button, not the green one) and you might have to wait a few moments (depending on how many people are using the servers at this moment). Then you can just download the file as any other you get from the internet. Once it's done, just double-click on it or right-click and choose 'Open' to unpack and install it. Afterwards use the 'Game.exe' file (the one with the unicorn head, the one with the gears is the game file, I included it so people working with the RPG Maker VX could take a look at my work) to start the program (it's an experiment, not a game, so there's no basic story to it, I just tried things out).

You will find four quests on the third floor of the lair, talk twice to the guy behind the counter there to start the first. The last quest has a wee bit of a story and looks like the Diving Bell RPG I'm currently working on will look (but, of course, this game will have various quests, a longer story and many NPCs and enemies).

Check which directory the downloads are set to (you usually find that information in the Options section of your browser). Then you should be able to find it. Otherwise, do a windows search for Experiment.exe and you should find it, too. No need to redownload.
