John 13:5-7 Amp. Bible

5. The He poured water into the basin and began washing the disciples' feet and wiping them with the towel which was tied around His waist.
6. When He came to Simon Peter, he said to Him, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?"
7. Jesus replied to him, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but you will [fully] understand it later."

Around Easter time the church that I go to does a symbol of washing the feet of the members of the church. Now I have heard it being done, but like Peter I didn't really understand.  But when Pastor Kevin Beck of Posttown First Church of God, that I got the true meaning of this symbolic act.

John 13:13-17 Amp. Bible

13. You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is who I am.
14. So if I the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet as well.
15. For I gave you [this as] an example, so that you should do [in turn] as I did to you.
16. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
17. If you know these things, you are blessed [happy and favored by God] if you put them into practice [and faithfully do them].

I originally thought that this symbolic act was just for the disciples, but in reality it is for us all. For it is a symbolic in Christ cleansing us from our sins.

1 John 1:9 Amp. Bible

9. If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins. He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrong-doing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].

It is like when we first accepted Christ into our lives then was baptized in water. It is a reminder of that baptism for what Christ has done for us.  The forgiveness of our sins. So like doing the Last Supper, we should also wash another's feet, like Christ did to His disciples.

Now this isn't exactly what Pastor Beck spoke, it is my take on the sermon that he gave to the congregation.

God Bless,
Have a good day,
John T. Begin
