Step One

"We admitted we were powerless over alcohol---that our lives had become unmanageable."

One of the first things we need to do is admit that we have a problem with alcohol.  And in return it has made our life to become unmanageable.  After that we need to take certain steps to quit.

Romans 7:18 Amp. Bible

18. For I know that nothing good live in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness---my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not.

We need to realize that we are sinners and that to over come alcohol we will need the Lord to come into our lives.  That our human nature is not going to help us to get sober.  We need to take a spiritual approach.

Psalm 6:6-8 Amp. Bible

6. I am weary with my groaning; Every night I soak my bed with tears. I drench my couch with my weeping.
7. My eye grows dim with grief; It grows old because of all my enemies.

How many times have you gone home from drinking that you just either hit the couch or the bed?  Then wake up wondering what you did last night.  It gets to the point that the grief you start to feel and want it to start.  So first you need to realize that alcohol is your enemy.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 Amp. Bible

19. I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore, you shall choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants.
20. by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding closely to Him; for He is your life your good life, your abundant life, your fulfillment] and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord promised (swore) to give to you fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

So when you admit that you are powerless over alcohol you are starting a journey with Christ in becoming the person you would like to be.  Not the drunk that you are now.

Step One

"We admitted we were powerless over alcohol---that our lives had become unmanageable."

1 Corinthians 8:2 NKJV

2. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows noting yet as he ought to know.

When we quit denying that we have a problem, and realize that we are powerless over alcohol that it has caused our lives to become unmanageable.  That we need to take certain steps to help us quit drinking. And admitting that we are powerless is the first step.

Mark 4:35-40 NKJV

35. On the same day, when evening had come. He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."
36. Now when they had left the multitude, they too Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.
37. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
38. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and aid to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
39. Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
40. But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful" How is it that you have no faith?"

Let's look at the boat as being our lives.  Our lives were like riding in that boat, and a windstorm has arisen, situations that are beating us down with problems, and causing stress and fear in our lives. And we do not know where to turn because we are powerless over the situation.  So then we need to find a power greater than ourselves, and that power is Christ.  All we have to do is ask Christ to intervene and He will simply say "Peace, be still!"  Then we will feel the peace that Christ gives us in time of trouble. And our lives will then become manageable and we will be able to do the right thing.

God Bless,

Have a good day,

Step One

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol---that our lives had become unmanageable.

John 15:1-2 Amp. Bible

1. I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vine-dresser.
2. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear fruit.[even richer and finer fruit].

One thing that we have to do is to look at our character defects.  We have to see how nonproductive that these character defects and understand why and how our lives have become unmanageable.  So pruning our character defects we can then move toward the solution to quit drinking.

Luke 15:17 Amp. Bible

17. But when he [finally] came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more than enough food, while I am dying here of hunger!

In pruning our character defects we see that we are in the same boat has the prodigal son got himself into.  We the reality of our lives and where some of our decisions were not good one.  Like the prodigal son we need to reach out to for help.  We need to invite the Lord into our life.

Romans 7:18-20 Amp. Bible

18. For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness---my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not.
19. For the good that I want to do, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
20. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want to do, I am no longer the one doing it [that is, it is not me that acts], but the sin [nature] which lives in me.

One reason that we couldn't quit drinking was because we are powerless to do so.  So we need to reach out to the Lord who will help us and let us know that we are not alone in our struggle of quitting.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 Amp. Bible

9. but He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you [My loving-kindness and My mercy are more than enough---always available---regardless of the situation]; for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and show itself most effectively] in [your] weakness." Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and may dwell in me.
10. So I am well pleased with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, and with difficulties, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak [in human strength], then I am strong [truly able, truly powerful, truly drawing from God's strength].

It is when we finally get the picture that we cannot quit on our own, that we need Christ in our lives.  It is then that we can more forward in our desire to quit drinking.

This concludes Step One.
