John 19:28.-30 Amp. Bible

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that ll was now finished, said in fulfillment of the Scripture, "I am thirsty."
29. A far full of sour wine was placed there; so they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on [a branch of] hyssop and held it to His mouth.
30. When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and [voluntarily] gave up His spirit.

When Jesus has said, "It is finished," He was talking about His fulfilling every command of the Father and every prophecy of Scripture, so Jesus voluntarily died.

With His death a new movement got it's start. The old method of sacrificing animals for the forgiveness of sin, was done.  For Jesus death took away that requirement because of Him following His Father command, and is now that because of His finishing His mission on earth that He paid the price for the forgiveness of sin. And animal sacrifices was no longer needed.

Acts 2:1-4 Amp. Bible

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place,
2. and suddenly a sound came from heave like a rushing violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3. There appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were being distributed [among them], and they rested on each one of them [as each person received the Holy Spirit].
4. And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages) as the Spirit was giving them and ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately],

It is finished turned out to be a new beginning.  A new way of worshiping the Lord. With His death God then sent the Holy Spirit for us to have, when we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It allows us to worship the Lord in the spirit than through the rituals that the Jewish religion gave us. It is more a personal way of worshiping, because the availability of the Holy Spirit that is within us.

Jesus mission on earth was finished, but because of the coming of the Holy Spirit He has set in a new mission, a new method of getting a better relationship with His Father.

God Bless,

Introduction
Acts 1:1-2 Amp. Bible

1. The first account I made, Theophilus, was [a continuous report] about all the things that Jesus began to do and to teach.
2. until the day when He ascended to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given instruction to the apostles (special messengers) whom He had chosen.

Luke is also the author of the Gospel Luke, and he wrote to Theophilus, as he is doing in writing Acts.

Acts 1:3 Amp. Bible

3. To these [men] He also showed Himself alive after His suffering [in Gethsemane and on the cross], by [a series of] many infallible proofs and unquestionable demonstrations, appearing to them over a period of forty days and talking to them about the things concerning the kingdom of God.

This is the only place in the Bible that you will read about how long Jesus stayed on earth teaching His disciples.

1 Corinthians 15:5-8 Amp. Bible

5. and He appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the Twelve.
6. After that He appear to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, the majority of whom are still alive, but some have fallen asleep [in death].
7. Then He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.
8. and last of all, as to one untimely (prematurely, traumatically) born, He appeared to me also.

So not only did the disciples saw Him but 500 other people saw Him.  And Paul was the last one to see Him.

Jesus then commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, for what He had told them will arrive soon.

John 14:16, 26 Amp. Bible

16. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor---Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever---

26. But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor---Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything, that I have told you.

Acts 1:5 Amp. Bible

5. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized and empowered and united with the Holy Spirit, not long from now.

Isaiah 32:15 Amp. Bible

15. Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fertile field, And the fertile field is valued as a forest.

It isn't until the Holy Spirit comes that they will be empowered with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus could not give them the Holy Spirit at that time.

John 7:39 Amp. Bible

39. But He was speaking of the [Holy] Spirit, whom those who believed in Him [as Savior] were to receive afterward. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

Jesus had to ascend up to Heaven before the Holy Spirit can be delivered to them.

Acts 1:6-8 Amp. Bible

6. So when they had come together, they asked Him repeatedly, "Lord, are You at this time reestablishing the kingdom and restoring it to Israel?"
7. He said the them, "It is not for you to know the times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority.
8. "But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth."

When the Holy Spirit comes we will be living by the Spirit.

Romans 8:4-5 Amp. Bible

4. so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power.]
5. For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose].

The Holy Spirit lets us leave the our sinful nature but to live our life in the spirit.

God Bless,

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

Acts 1:9-11 NASB

9. And after He had said these thing, He was lifted up while they were looking on a cloud received Him out of their sight.
10. And as they ere gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.
11. They also said, "Men of Galilee why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into Heaven."

Now these two men said "Men of Galilee" because the were from Galilee, with the exception of Judas, who hung himself because of what he did, was not present.

Now this wasn't the first time that angels have appeared to people.

Mark 16:5 NASB

5. Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.

In this situation the angle was telling Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome that Jesus has arisen. And there are other places in the Old Testament that angels have appeared as men.

Daniel 7:13 NASB

13. "I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was present before Him.

So Daniel saw what these angels were talking about when they said that we would see Jesus coming from heaven in the same way He went up.

The Upper Room

Acts 1:12-14 Amp. Bible

12 Then the disciples returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet (Olive Grove), which is near Jerusalem, [only] a Sabbath day's journey (less than one mile away.
13. When they had entered the city, they went upstairs to the upper room wheree they were staying [indefinitely]/ that is, Peter, and John and [his brothers] James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew (Nathanael) and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas (Thaddaeus) the son of James.
14. All these with one mind and one purpose were continually devoting themselves to prayer, [waiting together] along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

So here we have the disciples going up into the upper room, And they were of one mind and one purpose were continually devoting themselves to prayer.  Now make sure you notice that there were women also present.

Acts 1:15 Amp. Bible

15. Now on one of these days Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters (a gathering of about a hundred and twenty believers was there) and he said.

Now this happened sometime during the believers' 10 days of prayer and fellowship between the ascension and Pentecost.

Peter goes on to explain that since Judas Iscariot was one of the disciples, and the one who betrayed Jesus, and hung himself on a tree.  That they needed to pick a replacement for him.

Acts 1:21-22 Amp. Bible

21. So of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus spent with us.
22. beginning with the baptism by John [at the outset of Jesus' ministry] until the day when He was taken up from us---one of these men must become a witness with us [to testify] of His resurrection.

So Peter told what requirements that would be needed to take Judas place.  So they picked Barsabbas which means "son of the Sabbath, Justus "the righteous, and Matthias which means "gift of God".  Then they cast lots to see which one would be chosen,  The lot fell to Matthias, so he was added to the eleven apostles.

The Day of Pentecost

Acts 2:1 Amp. Bible

1 When the day of Pentecost has come, there were all together in one place,

Pentecost means "fiftieth" and refers to the Feast of Weeks.

Exodus 34:22-23 Amp. Bible

22. You shall observe and celebrate the Feast of Weeks (Harvest, First Fruits, or Pentecost), the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of In-gathering (Booths or Tabernacles) at the year's end.
23. Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel.

Now it was celebrated 50 days after Passover.

Acts 2:2 Amp. Bible

2. and suddenly a sound came from heaven like a rushing violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Wind is frequently used in Scripture as a picture of the Spirit.

Ezekiel 37:9-10 Amp. Bible

9. Then He said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, son of man, and say to the breath, 'Thus says the Lord God, "Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may life"'"
10. So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they came to life and stood up on their feet, an exceedingly great army.

Acts 2:3-5 Amp. Bible

3. There appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were being distributed [among them], and they rested on each one of them [as each person received the Holy Spirit].
4. And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages), as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately].
5. Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout and God-fearing men from every nation under heaven.

Now these men were getting bewildered because they were hear from the people that had received the Holy Spirit, speaking in their own language about the marvelous works of God.

Acts 2:12-13 Amp. Bible

12 And they were beside themselves with amazement and were greatly perplexed, saying one to another, "What could this mean?"
13. But others were laughing and joking and ridiculing them, saying, "They are full of sweet wine and are drunk!"
