This was the version I remember.

Charted at #6 on Billboard Hot 100 in May 1957. Rusty's last Top 10 hit. Original Billboard review: "Draper has a very strong cover of this tune

We have a local guy here (Bobby Darren) he is known on Midwest Country also, that plays guitar that way. Like they call it , upside down and backwards, I used to think he was the only one that did it .. he did too, he comes from a big family and everyone played guitar and he was the only lefty,  so as a kid , he just taught himself. But I see it so often now when i go to festivals all over the place.

I wonder how many times that song has been recorded ... can anyone ask Alexa. I could ask Alexa, but she is my Great Granddaughter and not quite 2 yrs old

In the last 20 years or so there has probably been severral hundred pickers that have jammed at the fiirehouse and I have seen I don't know how many in different bands and clubs in my life. There have been many left handed upside down backward pickers. They were never more than just another lefty to me. I remember Irvin who would flip his guitar over and play it. He also played the banjo but had a left handed banjo to play. He could not flip it over because I think he needed a thumb string at the top and it would have been on the bottom if he flipped it over. Of course some of the lefty guitar players may have had left handed guitars also.I think I would look for a pick guard on the bottom of their guitar. I guess you could take the pick guard off the top and put it on the bottom

I've heard Freight Train by so many people but can't remember
who actually had the biggest hit.  As for Elizabeth the writer, I
only learned of her in the last two or three years.

My old buddy Little Enis is the only left handed picker
I've seen chord upside down from over the top of the
neck.

Actually, I hadn't thought of Thumbs in years.

I watched that clip with Merle Travis a while back
and didn't know the young man he was playing
with was his son. I saw Merle do pretty much
the same act, only there were three of them.
It was a on one of the Town Hall Party shows,
and it was Merle, Larry Collins and Joe Maphis
on one guitar.

I believe that it was Pete Seeger's version that I had heard first.

Thanks Cracker, I never even knew he had a son.
Of course I never knew much about his personal
life, period. I know he was one heck of a guitar picker,
and it appears his son was too.

Waymon
There's a clip on Youtube of Pete Seeger interviewing
Elizabeth Cotten and her performing Freight Train.
