My claim for ESA starts on 21st October. I earn myself a bit of pin money doing on-line surveys. I guess I get between £15 and £50 per month and put in around an hour a day, on average. This money would be particularly useful when my wages stop, just to give me a bit of personal spending money for myself - or treats for other people (I'm currently saving Amazon vouchers to get Mr H a kindle for his birthday).

I'm terrified of ending up in court and being branded a fraudster. Is the small amount of money I get likely to cause a problem? Would I have to declare it to someone? I'd rather just stop doing the surveys if it is likely to make things difficult.

I can't answer your question; but if you're unsure, tell them anyway.

with that little ammount it would easily fall into the catergory of permitted work...

Do I have to declare this somewhere on my ESA form, or at a later stage?

I believe there's a separate form you need to fill in.

dont forget the emphasis on the flexible nature of the work, the inconsistency that you can do it, etc etc. pointing out the obvious i know, but it saves the questions later... its the same for my studies. I have to put down about how its different from working...

 Hi Hurtyback

I would declare it especially if you are going onto income based esa, what you need to do would be provide proof of your "income" over the last 3 months showing how much you "earned" the dwp will then average it out although if your income fell below what they consider your average you would want to tell them.   the other query would be how long are you spending doing this?  Is it for 10 minutes at a time with breaks and do you sometimes have to stop cos you just can't concentrate any more.  They might be iffy if they think you can concentrate for an hour every day - I know its seems far fetched but how about a diary - you know logged on at 7.15, did survey 7.25 break for cuppa, back at 8.15 looked at couple of web pages - can't concentrate - gave up.    I know that seems OTT but better safe than sorry - otherwise they'll put you forward for a job in call centre where "you only have to concentrate for short periods" haha
you could put this in the page at the back of the ESA50- Is there anything else you think we should know"

thats my tuppence worth but no idea how dwp will interprete it

 Hi Hurtyback
Have a look at the 'permitted work'  with regard to ESA posts over on B and W, the mods there are pretty clued up on the pros and cons of it
Cheers, Pen.

Thanks Monic, I would be looking at CESA, I'm not entiled to any income based benefits as Mr H earns 'too much' (ie, m ore tha a pittance).

It's good to know where I should declare this, if I decide to continue doing it. The survey invitations arrive spread out during the day and I do them as and when I feel able. Some days I might not qualify for anything, others I might get a few.

how are the payments made... ie are they worded like a thank you gift.  like catalogue or shopper appreciation points. like nector or home shopping spend and save points.

would it be possible to carry on doing them but in Mr Hs name.

The surveys are 'paid' in points which then add up and are exchanged for vouchers usually. Some pay into paypal and very occasionally I will be get a cheque. It would be really difficult to prove how much I get as I belong to quite a few different sites and everything is administered on-line I can't do them in Mr H's name because I need to keep the demographics the same and most survey sites would not allow a second account on my computer.

It is tempting to simply not declare them - but them we get back to the fear of being branded a benefit fraudster if anyone found out later!

 Hi Hurtyback
if your paid in points then you could argue its like Boots, Nectar or Tesco points - after all my nectar card currently has £20 worth of points on it,  I'd write a note explaining you don't get cash you get points you exchange for vouchers.  I don't think they would consider that income otherwise they would force us all to shop at Tesco to get points to supplement our income

Oh Monic, you have frightened me now.  and what would they do if, like me, you cannot be bothered to stack up nector points?

I added the info about my surveys to the end of my ASA50 - told them that I do about an hour, spread throughout the day in 20 minute sections as and when I feel able and pointed out that I lie on my back to use the lappie. I also told them that I am 'paid' mainly in vouchers. The worry is not how I am paid, more that someone will decide that doing this means that I would be able to work!

@auntie - I have just used my nectar points to buy a t shirt and a jumper :¬)

I see these survey rewards not as a payment, but as an incentive to complete. You are not being paid as such, but thanked for giving an opinion. I spend so much time on the Net with work, I thought I might as well fill in some surveys whilst I'm waiting for work to come in. I wouldn't dream of declaring them.

On the plus side I often get offered free goods to trial. In the last few months I've trialled fabric conditioner, laundry gel, stain remover, body lotion,  toothpaste and eye cream. Currently I'm trialling a skincare product and I should have some cereal arriving soon.
Clix Research and Opinion World are two companies, plus I do home trials for Tesco.

I haven't heard of 'clix' and I am registered with opinion world but not gettnig any paid surveys at the moment - just stuff offering entries into the draw if I give them 203- minutes of my time. Yeah. Right.

I might come to regret declaring it but - as you might have gathered - am paranoid about being accused of fraud!

I agree, they are not counted as work if you are doing them in exchange for non-taxable items such as vouchers, you are only working if you are receiving taxable vouchers (certain types are taxable such as those you can exchange for childcare) or cash.

However, you should still ensure they know about any activity that you do which could be considered by them to be work, if only to point out all the ways in which it *isn't* working, so that you are 100% sure there is no grey area here. I'd send it in as a "Here is a letter to make sure that you know that this thing that I do is not work and it is not work for the following reasons and whilst I realise that I did not need to declare this because it isn't work, I chose to declare it to make sure you were able to verify for me that it doesn't need to be declared"

I put it on the 'other information' section and told them that I do this whilst lying on my back on the bed, for about 20 minutes at a time, as and when I feel able and for an average of 1 hour a day.  Fingers crossed!
