Just to check I'm using the right terminology - my MIL says a rollator is one of those V-shaped walking frames on wheels, which often has a basket or bag on it.

Mother-in-law wants one, only with a seat on it too. I think I've seen such things but don't know what to look for.
MIL currently walks with two sticks, one of which has four feet for extra stability, and has a folding stool/stick as well that FIL has to carry for her so she can rest when needed. If she had one of these rollators with a seat and a basket then she could go off by herself more and sit down when needed and carry her own stuff.

As the only one in the family who knows anything about any disabilities, and who lives near a medical supplies shop, I've been delegated to get her one for Christmas! Fine by me but I don't want to get something useless.

MIL is also a very large woman, dress size 36-38, so anything for her to sit on is going to have to be very sturdy!
Please don't say 'get her to lose weight then' - the best solution is simply to try and keep her as mobile as possible.

Recommendations? Do such things exist? Can they cope with going on grass as well as pavements and shops? Anything else I need to know?

It sounds as if a bariatric rollator would be the best thing. I have seen 4 wheeled ones with seats, but not 3 wheeled ones.

I have found one tri-walker (3 wheeler) with a seat, although it only takes up to 20 stone, is made to order and costs £200+ ! smiley73

One of those 4-wheeled ones looks like the right kind of thing. MIL has had both knees replaced but the new ones didn't take very well, so what the site says about these devices being useful to take part of someone's weight so they can continue to walk sounds exactly what is needed. Says they are OK indoors and outdoors, too. I just hope MIL is under 28 stone, though...

*sofie* thank you too - the medical shop near me has a lot of mobility devices and has catalogues and lots of expertise. I've hired a wheelchair from them before for me, but given it's not me going to be using this, I need to know what questions to ask.

Ebay has a bunch of sellers with new bariatric rollators (all the same model, I think) for just over £100 so will probably go there unless anyone knows are particularly good supplier, perhaps near Bournemouth?

 I have found Argos very good price wise compared to some "special" disabled aids supply shops. the term disabled often adds £££s to items..... 

I got mine from Aldi (looks just like the Argos tubular one but cost less)so if you have time watch for the Aldi /lidl offers.mine does up to 18 stone.

try searching for heavy duty bariatric walkers online so you are armed with an average price before walking in a shop.

shop around.  boots do them, Halfords has a  28st one at about £175.

--regarding Off Road use---  I use mine to sit on while hanging out washing and to carry basket.. they work not bad if the ground is dry and hard.  although walking on uneven grass is hard work.  not ideal on squidgy mud and grass and cleaning is required to ensure all 4 wheels can keep turning.  if your out and its been raining and you go into a shop, I would recommend doing the rollator shuffle ie roll it back and forth on the shops door mat before proceding on the shops smooth tiled or wood floors.  Just to dry the wheels. 

they dont work in snow or ice but hey neither does my power scooter. 

--In the house--
they are fine on carpet, tiles and wood/laminate flooring. 

I would recommend the type with brakes if you MIL has bother sitting to stand just so it doesnt roll away mid stand.

 I think it might be a good to get MIL to come with you and try a few out before buying. The last thing you want if for it to be unsuitable for her.

Because this is a disability, there's VAT relief. This can knock off a lot from the price.

18 stone certainly won't be a high enough weight limit - MIL is certainly nearly 28 stone (online search suggests that is roughly a 60-inch waist).

Will make sure any model I get has brakes.

There are several disability supply stores in and around Bournemouth. Have you tried Bridges at Horseshoe common (if they are still there)?
