I am losing mobility in my right arm and shoulder. Mobility here has always been limited due to lack of muscles and by this I mean i am totally without said muscles, not I lack tone.

I am having difficulty explaining this to physio, who seem to think if i do some "simple" stretches all will be okay...

I have three stages - normality; agony,
                                  stretch; screaming the place down
stop no increase in pain, no movement; paralysis

now anyone know of any wording that physiotherapists understand re the above situation?

any suggestions, including stop going, gratefully accepted

Can you get someone to video you? It may help show the physio what you mean.

How on earth can the stupid physio not understand that you do not have muscles in that area?

Surely s/he can actually feel that there are no muscles there?

Hi Otter, many years ago I had a physiotherapist, who did not really understand my problems. However, when I referred to him as a Physioterrorist with an infernal machine (traction device), he was not amused. In effect it resulted in a change of physiotherapist who was more considerate.
Maybe a request for a change of Physiotherapist, would help.
Good Luck ,
Chas.

My Sympathies Escapecommittee, I'm having the same thing with the left  hand, arm and shoulder, due to cervical spondylosis. Have any of these physios actually looked at, or felt, your right arm and shoulder to see that there are no muscles there at all? You'd think that would be the first thing they'd notice. Joining Yvettea in head banging.

apparently I am making progress...

I have pointed out the lack of muscles and was told that this was because I didn't use them enough and they were wasting away - so yep- we have established that muscle mass that should be there isn't - but penny seems yet to have dropped to why that is (hand to face)

it is unfortunately a teaching hospital, so yes the text books are open on the floor

they get quite upset when you inform them that having had this all your life there is a distinct likelihood that you won't get any better

Okay perhaps I should rephase the question - can you for want of better wording walk out and never return to a physiotherapy programme, as after 3 years it is really starting to suck

 Hi Otter

as a voluntary patient you are always free to withdraw your co-operation.  I suggest you write a letter for your GP's file stating specifically why you are refusing to co-operate with any further physiotherapy.
