Last year when I was having issues with my depression, I was only happy (if you can call it that) when I was on my period. Well, I was able to function better and was in a less zombie-like state.
I am now in the situation whereby, I am only depressed just before I start my periods.

Does anyone else get the latter, and how do you deal with it, please? I was rather concerned on Monday, as it was so unlike me to just be like that.

Thankfully, I didn't do anything; but was so close.

Sofie i am absolutely dire in the 3 days preceding mine and its only afterwards that I realised oh its the curse again- I think that is what the victorians called it - how very true

Talk to your doctor about this pattern, you may need some endocrine tests to check for abnormalities.  Some women find a B vit complex helps with these kinds of symptoms and some take stuff like evening primrose oil

Hey Shaz, hope all well...

Yes, sometimes it's hard to be a woman. Very hard indeed. I lost so much weight in hospital that my periods stopped altogether, and when they returned it was with a true vengeance! I was up and down like a yoyo, and I felt thoroughly misunderstood.
But I had a chat with a friend and we developed some coping strategies. Basically, be kind to yourself when you're at your most vulnerable. Don't take on more than strictly necessary and make sure your loved ones have adequate warning. Eat a lot of chocolate and have a lot of cuddles etc. And always remember, the mood will pass.
There's a lot of good advice on this thread: Deb's brilliant as always, and I like the nod to 'the curse' from e/c. The truth is, life for us all is full of ups and downs. But if we know ourselves, we'll pull through. And there is nothing more important than compassion.

Peace,
Fliss

We call that PMS (pre menstrul stress) and I've always got it badly the week before I'm due.  At least it has eased of some these days (possibly a side effect of different meds? not sure, but glad it has!) it used to be so bad that for a week each month the tinest thing would have me in uncontrollable tears, half the time I couldn't even work out what had set it off if someone asked!

It's not fun, and I hope it eases soon

Hey CrazyKim (nice name!), hi again Shaz...

Yes, no fun having PMS! But lately I've tried evening primrose oil and that's helped a bit (cheers, Deb!).
And as for the no-show, Shaz, perhaps that's just your body's response to stress? When I first started work I'd sometimes go for a couple of months without; a bit worrying at the time, of course, but nothing sinister.
Any worries, a quick work with the GP should put you to rights. But plenty of support here too!

Best,
Fliss

When I have PMS it is as though I see the world in a new light - the correct way of seeing it.
Afterwards, luckily, I forget!

Ahem.

Good evening, dear auntie; I trust I see you well...
I PM'd our friend Shaz as I had an interesting story to tell her, which some of a more delicate constitution may have found a little disturbing...
Not about myself, mind. I am all equilibrium! Hmm...
And there may be something in forgetting...

Well, I'm off to bed shortly, to dream of many interesting things...

Sleep well, all!
Fliss ;-)

 :) Thanks Hermes

"unless I'm to be another Virgin Mary lol"

lol, I still remember a few years back now trying to convince an idiot ER doc (having come in with stomach pains, after a car accident the previous day) that I was most definately not pregnant, having done none of the neccessary actions to get there!!  Much to my annoyance he refused to believe me and check for other causes till I took a pregnancy test!

No probs, Kim!

Fliss here, by the way.
Sorry about your bad experience in ER. It's a difficult environment: people bustling about and making a racket. And of course back in February they asked me whether I might be pregnant, seemingly oblivious to my physical frailty. Let's just say, if I'd attempted anything of that nature at that time I probably would have ended up in hospital! Acute care indeed...

Well, gotta laugh...
Hope you're doing okay today :-)

When I had appendicitis they insisited on doing a pregnancy test even though I hadn't been doing the relevant activity.

When I have PMS I'm fine, it's the rest of the world which is being unreasonable.

Yes, it's not easy, is it? Not easy at all...
But despite everything I'm happy to be a woman. With the return of my periods came the curse of PMS, but also the blessing of getting my curves back and feeling a lot more confident in myself.
A friend lately told me I reminded him a little of J-Lo, and I'm okay with that!

Best,

A friend works on  a gynae ward and tells me that in A & E they have to do pregnancy tests because some people are convinced they can't be pregnant (denial) or if they go out drinking they forget that they had sex, or sometimes people just lie about it for whatever reasons of their own.

They can't tell who is telling the truth so everyone has to have a pregnancy test so the hospital can't be sued if they are given treatment which is not good for a pregnancy.

It is a watch your back scenario nowadays.

Hello Yvette, hi all...

Well, that makes sense! Just self-preservation for the hospital really.

Hope everyone's hormones are under control today!

I can understand that they would want to watch their back, but the fact that he refused to believe it was anything else, dispite the recent involvement in a car accident, was what annoyed me.  I could have dealt with, 'look we have to ask you to take a pregnancy test just in case' no problem!

"When I have PMS I'm fine, it's the rest of the world which is being unreasonable."

So true!

Whilst this thread is flagged up as a "lady" issue I just want to iterject that as a man I suffered terribly from PMS for 20 years and especially during the divorce that followed. LOL

Now, rest assured, I do not wish to imply that your, er, good lady ex-wife is any sort of bitch. Nor that I am myself. I simply alert you to the second Top Comment...

 Hi Sofie
sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. Have you tried a herbal treatment called 'Agnus Castus', it's avilable from Holland and Barrett, and evens out your hormonal highs and lows during your cycle.
http://www.hollandandbarrett.com
If you do decide to try it, run it passed your GP first to check it doesn't contra-indicate with any of your existing medication just to be on the safe side.
Cheers, Pen.

Hello ladies (and Sociable Peter!),

Hope all doing well.
This sounds good, Pen; best check with my GP first, mind.

Thanks very much!
