Warning: Live Ammo in use :)

This is a test topic I'm using to see what different formatting elements look like on my display, as adapted to my particular visual impairment.

I use magnification and reduced brightness/contrast on a conventional screen, and I have my browser set to lock out many of the abuses that web developers can commit.

In particular, my browser settings forbid web pages from:

- changing the font.
- reducing the text size to less than 18 points.
- changing the foreground and background colours.
- using table, image or other element borders.
- changing the colour of buttons and controls.
- using background images for table cells or the page as a whole.

I see all text in black on a grey background, but foreground images are rendered in their normal sizes and colours.

Yes, these settings do result in a rather strange looking view at times :)

You have just seen a test of the "Quick Quote" method for replying to someone else's post.

This works fine on my display.

This is a test of the UBB Code quoting method.

The Q directive doesn't seem to do anything.

This is a test of using horizontal lines to "manually quote" text when using the "Reply" button next to the "New Poll" button at the end of a thread.

Here are some bits of text formatted with UBB Code.

FONT: Arial 24 point text in red.
B: Bold text.
I: Italic text.
U: Underlined text.
MARQUEE: Scrolling text?

Notes:

1. The FONT directive does very little on my system, because my browser is set to forbid web pages from changing the font and foreground/background colours. It also forbids reducing the font size to less than 18 points.

2. I can't seem to get the CENTER directive to work.

3. Bold, italic and underline all work for me.

4. MARQUEE is an abomination. I warned you about the live ammo :)

Here are some ways to format URLs, named links and email addresses using UBB Code.

URL: (for plain URLs) http://www.aimoo.com
L: (for named links) Aimoo

URL: (for plain email addresses) mailto:nobody@nowhere.com
E: (for named email addresses) Mr Nobody

Note: I can't seem to get the UBB LINK directive to work.

Here is an image of the Aimoo logo, incorporated using an UBB Code IMG directive:

I can see the image on my display.

Here is an Adobe Flash animation, incorporated using an UBB Code FLASH directive:

Here are two ways to make lists using UBB Code.

BULLET:

  • B
  • ulleted item 1.
  • B
  • ulleted item 2.

    NUM:

    1. N
    2. umbered item 1.
    3. N
    4. umbered item 2.

UBB-coded lists seem to be broken.

Right: that's all of the UBB Code directives tested, except for the MEDIA one, which I couldn't figure out at all.

WARNING: UBB Code is fragile. You may find that using the "Reply" button next to the "New Poll" button at the bottom of the thread is more reliable than using the "Quick Reply" box. If you're using UBB Code, be prepared to check your post and edit it if the UBB Code breaks.

You can use HTML in your posts if you happen to know HTML.

Bold text with italics as well going back to plain italics and finally, normal text.

    Link to Aimoo

If you want to do that, you have to use the HTML editing mode in the full-function post editor, not the "Quick Reply" box.

WARNING: HTML editing is just as fragile as UBB Code. If you do this, check your post to make sure you get what you expect and edit it again if it breaks.

Unfortunately, I can't see most of the full-function post editor - the one you get by clicking on the "Reply" button next to the "New Poll" button at the bottom of the thread - because my browser accessibility settings lock out a lot of the rendering functionality the Aimoo web developers used for it.

Someone else will need to do the formatting experiments for that one - but wait until I get back to the firing range bunker first :)
