To some, baked beans are baked beans.

But I disagree.

I like Heinz from WeightWatchers baked beans. Which, unfortunately, are the dearest to buy.

Even ordinary Heinz baked beans are not as tasty.

So many years ago I had to resign myself to paying more for my baked beans experience.

But, to paraphrase the words of a shampoo advert, "They are worth it!"

Which brand do you prefer? Or are you not bothered?

The one food I dislike immensely is baked beans
What is it that makes them so wonderful?  I've never figured it out!

I occasionally went to the one which is about 3 miles or so up the road when our local transport scheme was only a pound but it's all changed so it wouldn't be cost effective now, sadly.

It depends if you actually know what make they are. There's something psychological going on here. When I was a kid my parents always bought Heinz. I have a cousin just slightly younger than me who lived on the same road - me at 84, him at 106 -and we were always round at each other's for tea. His mum always bought Crosse and Blackwell and I developed a dislike for them, even though they probably weren't that different.

To this day I have never bought ones for myself that aren't Heinz. In fact I had some for my tea last night, with toast, Quorn sausages and grated cheese over the top. However once or twice most weeks I will eat in the cafe at the health centre after swimming, and I nearly always have beans, either as part of a veggie breakfast or with cheese on a baked potato. I haven't a clue what make they are (and I'd guess they are a cheap variety) but they taste okay.

What didn't taste okay though was once when I was in my early 20s and went to visit a friend who was away at university. When I arrived he asked if I wanted some beans on toast. Of course I replied so he served me some up. Aarrrrggghhh. I thought my throat was going to collapse. What the hell are they I asked, and he showed me the tin. Happy Shopper spicy variety. Horrific. Never again. Still one of the top three worst things I've ever had in my mouth.

The "normal" ones that are in tomato sauce from Morrisons or the curried ones from Morrisons. :)

Beats going all the way into town or paying through the nose at the "local" shop.

>>Crosse and Blackwell<<

No.  They don't float my boat.

It just goes to show how different tastes are, even with something so universal as baked beans.

A while back Which? conducted a taste test (using 120 members of the public) for baked beans and Branston came out top with Asda in second place, and Morrison's Value as the best budget choice.

Personally I don't find Branston much different from Heinz, I haven't tried the others. It may be the memory playing tricks but I think Heinz were tastier years ago, OTOH it may be the taste buds failing. I seem to remember them also being softer. Nowadays I prefer Tesco standard beans although I think the sauce a little too sweet.

I do quite like the Heinz BBQ and curried beans as an occasional treat.

Along with pies, Uncle Joe's Mint Balls and Robinson's saddles.

The worst beans I have ever tasted were the old Tesco economy.

#9 I think you're right Jockice, as Heinz was the big seller people assocciate the taste with the title....tomato soup as well.   Some years ago they did a taste test with Heinz TS against real TS made by a top chef....guess which came out on top!!

#12 I think the recipe had to be changed re reducing salt and sugar.      (If it tastes good it must be bad for yousmiley115)

The best, for me, was Aldi some years ago....I think they were Italian....real tomato tastesmiley56 (If this is not a tomato ...sorry)

Off subject, I remember in Oz a long time ago when tomato sauce/ketchup had to be 90% tomato......a lot of sauces changed from being tomato sauce to red sauce.    And peanut butter changed to peanut paste  ("cause it didn't have butter in it !!)

Lot of truth there! My heart sinks every time I see 'New Improved Recipe' on the packaging. You just know they have cheapened the ingredients and worsened the product.

We used to have Tesco baked beans but went off them a while ago as the sauce was very sweet and the beans were hard. We went back to good old Heinz - but have just gone off those recently, so I will have to see what else is out there. It is really disappointing to not enjoy beans on toast anymore!

Baked beans are hopelessly overrated and have no place in the English breakfast.

I totally agree with you about breakfast, beans spoil the egg-yolk.

Beans on toast for tea is another matter entirely.

Yes. But they lower the tone of the classic English grill.

What a random thread this is, but how spooky cos it caught my eye as I had baked beans on toast for breakfast this morning.

My partner and I are always doing 'taste tests' among different brands of the same thing but I don't think we've done baked beans yet.

The nearest decent size supermarket to me is Saisnburys so I do most of my bigger food shops from there. From what they sell I'd say I'm quite happy with their own brand normal variety as its a good combo of taste etc & price - I'm a Yorkshire man so I'm obsessed with value for money. However imho their 'value range' or whatever they call them, really aren't worth the cheaper price, the beans are quite weady and the sauce is insipid.

I also don't like sainsburys Reduced Sugar Reduced Salt Baked Beans (and therefore less taste) baked beans. But what’s really interesting to me is that this version has approx 60% more calories, double the amount of fat and more carbs (despite less sugar) than their normal ones!

I think I’ve tried Branston’s and was disappointed they didn’t taste even ever so slightly of Branston, but I could be making that up.

Heinz curried beans are my particular fave, but I don't eat them too often as they have a somewhat catastrophic effect on my nether regions and my better half can't stick the smell *giggle*

>>beans on toast <<

I have to serve the beans on the side of the plate and then scoop them onto each separate piece of cut-up toast before I eat it.

Otherwise, the beans make the toast soggy. Yuck.
