Spray your TUPPERWARE with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces, and there won't be any stains.
I will have to try this next time I freeze left overs. :-)

Some good ones there. The cola as deodoriser one is interesting. For ages I've been wanting to try and make my own laundry gel (for washing clothes). Anyway I got round to it yesterday and hallelujah, it works! If you Google 'laundry gloop' you can come up with various recipes/methods but here is mine: Equipment req. 1 v. large saucepan (stockpot is ideal) 1 wooden spoon Jug Bucket or similar v. large plastic storage container with lid. For the gloop: 1 bar of ordinary soap, finely grated 8 oz washing soda 8oz borax (not essential but stops gloop from foaming and acts as deodoriser) 9 litres hot water. A few drops of essential oils (not necessary, but add a bit of scent) Method. Grate the soap as finely as you can. Put in the large pan and add one and a half litres of boiling water, bring to a simmer on the stove and stir until dissolved. When dissolved, add the washing soda and borax and stir until this is dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool SLIGHTLY then pour into bucket or other large receptacle. Add up to 8 litres of hot water, pop lid on and allow to set in a cool place. Mine took about eight hours to set. When set, it will look like blancmange. Add a small cupful directly to the DRUM of your washing machine (not the dosing drawer) with the laundry. If you have v.smelly laundry you may wish to add a scoop of Oxy -clean type granules to the dosing drawer. Each washload will cost me about 2p, I calculated. It would have been 1p if I hadn't used the borax. I do use fabric softener but the laundry was clean and smelled clean. It's definitely worth a try!

"Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning."
I'll vouch for that one! It also helps to cut too long wicks back a bit.
"To help remove burnt on food from your pans, simply add a few drops of washing up liquid and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stove top."
I had never thought of boiling the washing up water! Will have to try that one.
"Getting pee out of clothes and bedding. Add
a can of cheap cola to your laundry and let it soak for half an
hour before putting it in the washing machine takes the pee smell out.
It also works great on getting grease out of clothes. Again, just let
the clothes soak for about 30 mins before putting them in the washing
machine."
The Mythbusters (love that show lol) proved that Cola is a surprisingly useful substance! (Google Mythbusters Cola Myths to see the videos :) ) Although it does make you concerned about what it is doing to everyones teeth!
Another good one that a friend of mine showed me the other day ( I didn't believe her lol) is that cleaning windows with newspaper and cleaning spray works better than using a cloth or paper towel, it doesn't streak as much!

Washing soda - if you don't have sensitive skin - is a really good de-greasant. I usually line my grill pan with foil to keep it clean, but if you do have anything really greasy to clean - like the grill mesh - it's great. Leather furniture cleaner is very expensive but baby wipes, or cheap baby lotion and a cloth does just as good a job. If you have a greasy mark on clothes try rubbing in cornflour and brushing it off before washing. If I need a quick buff for my shoes I also use baby wipes. To give more long-lasting leather protection, Vaseline is really useful. It conditions the leather really well. If you still have Venetian blinds rather than verticals, the quickest way to clean them is to dunk them in soapy water (or washing soda) in the bath, then hang them over the washing line, rather then wipe individual slats. I usually clean the kitchen floor using a spray and cloths / kitchen roll, rather than risk a wet and slippery floor from a mop and bucket. Personal care:- If my hair has gone an extra day between washes I mix the shampoo with a little bit of water and apply it to dry hair before working the lather down my hair, washing the hair as if it was a piece of cloth, rather than tangling it. Most soap-based toiletries are interchangeable. If someone buys you bubble bath and you only have a shower, use it as hand wash. A plastic net body puff holds bubble bath well enough so that it can be used as shower gel. Apply body lotion and body butter using the backs of your hands and you won't need hand cream. If you have run out of shaving foam or shaving gel, hair conditioner can be used and unloved hair conditioner can also be used as fabric conditioner (but not vice - versa! Cooking tips: - I always roast my chickens, ducks and turkeys breast side down, it may not look as pretty but the juices run into the breast and keep it wonderfully moist and succulent. Not only does corn on the cob taste better with a bit of sugar, frozen peas do too. Fish cooks better in the micro if carefully covered than by any other method. For a quick and tasty pasta sauce use tinned concentrated soup - what used to be Campbell's - either as a pour over sauce or in a pasta bake. I'm sure there's loads more that I do, I just can't bring them to mind as so many are just automatic now. (Message edited by AndMac On 23/07/2011 10:22 AM)

Cleaning windows with newspaper
(Date Posted:23/07/2011 5:27 PM)
I can remember my Mum doing this, cleaning windows with newspaper, and presumably it worked in those days. However someone cleaned my windows with newspaper and it scratched the glass in places - but I do have 150 year-old glass.

insect bites
(Date Posted:23/07/2011 5:32 PM)
To get rid of itch from insect bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief.
I have insects who lurk under the bench in my garden and then pop out when I sit down. Their bite brings up great big spots. So I will be trying out this one pretty soon, well I will if the sun ever gets to shine.
I'll let you know if it works on me. I usually use calamine lotion on the bites, or aloe vera gel. But both of these take a couple of applications to really work.

This link saves me typing it all. www.vinegartips.com/Scripts/auntie for insect bites/stings look at "big ouch" thread The old Campbell condensed soups were great for cooking And. I used to like the mushroom and garlic, can't get it now so you have to add garlic granules to mushroom soup. Fry off turkey thigh meat put in casserole with par boiled pasta (5min) and condensed soup..........put in oven for 30min (more if you want to but don't let it dry out) add any seasoning you like Low cholesterol and tasty.

Have noticed a strange thing in the house this year. Not with insects, but spiders. I really hate wolf spiders -- still got a scar on one leg where a subsequently demised Scottish one bit me years ago -- and, presumably English, ones had been finding their way into this house too (splat, hisss, crump). But now there are a lot of the type of comparatively small-bodied spider around -- sort that's got long, thin legs; not meaning harvesters. Seen wolf spiders attack and kill quite large outdoor spiders, but they seem to be keeping well clear of these. Yet the spindly ones aren't at all aggressive, and have no inclination to bite people......

You mean the ones that look like a dot with eight lines? My house is so full of them I'm afraid they go straight up the hoover pipe nowadays. Otherwise rescuing them would become a full time job.

Not sure -- that sounds more like the harvesters; it certainly is if instead of being raised on their legs they spend most of their time laid flat against whatever (usually) vertical surface they're on, with their legs totally straight. Unlike them the spindly spiders never, afaics, have their legs straight, and do make webs.

Think the spindly ones might be the "daddy long-legs" spider, which is listed as a house variety more common down south. The evil ones may not after all be the "wolf" spiders but these horrible, larger things...... http://www.guardian.co.uk/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-21253,00.htmlI detest them enough to have (years ago) cracked a concrete floor hitting one with a sledgehammer, broken a wooden sweeping brush on another, and perhaps the ultimate was shooting one with a .22 rimfire.Imo, they have a great deal in common with Atos, Unum and Establishment politicians.Wish robins (always been fond of robins) ate these latter-named monsters as well. Harvesters, btw, are supposedly not "true" spiders, apart from anything else only having two eyes. (Message edited by Offworld On 24/07/2011 8:22 AM)

Offworld, I thought "daddy long legs" was a flying insect not a spider.
In fact haven't they just discovered that it has venom that is fatal to humans, but has no way of delivering it.
BTW most venom is not dangereous if swallowed unless you have ulcers or broken blood vessels inside.
(Chinese drink cobra venom)
As for spiders ask Kim................there's some nasty ones in Oz.

Expect they're called that because of the similarity of leggyness.
But re the spiders in Oz, the very aggressively toxic UK one is it seems a relative of one of their nasties. I got blistering where the bite was, it took months to heal, and years later skin still seems to be comparatively thin there. Perhaps in retrospect should have got something from GP to put on it (if there is anything). Killed that particular spider with an extremely vigorous application of Yellow Pages when a few days later it tried sneaking up for another attack.

Not so fast. As I type I have tried it out - it is in the oven now. I've added garlic and white wine and leeks and mushroom and onion to chicken soup with chicken and pasta and sprinkled some grated parmesan on top.
I shall report back shortly.

I knew it wasn't gonna be sensible when I saw your name attached to it Save your old toothbrushes - really useful for cleaning fiddly bits in your home (like the dials on an oven or a microwave, where old food spots seem to gather, and bathroom sink outlets, where hairs and soap residue tend to end up...) Don't bother with expensive toilet cleaner - supermarket own-brand bleach does the job just as well, left overnight. Want something sweet after a meal but watching the calories? Try a couple of dried dates (the Deglet Nour variety that used to only be seen at Christmas but is available now all year round)

Precisely. You have to add other things to make it vaguely edible - my whole point.
It bears barely no relation to Stalwart's "recipe"

*Shudders* Please don't! I'm arachniphobic! Have to admit though, as far as they go Daddy long legs are the least awful of the lot, as whilst they are harmless to humans (as already pointed our), they kill other spiders, which would be why your other nasty would be keeping clear!

In cash - strapped times in the past I have used washing-up liquid as shampoo. It's perfectly fine, essentially it's just the same chemicals and the additions to shampoo are just variations on a theme. Just rinse it out fully as you may find it irritates the scalp slightly, being quite drying.
One thing that definitely does shift burnt food from pans is washing soda. Just soak overnight in a strong solution. If you have no washing soda, add a good slug of vinegar to some boiling water and simmer the pan on the stove. Alternatively biological washing powder does the trick too, when heated up in solution in the burnt pan. Has to be bio tho, to work well I have a nice new ceramic hob now and very seldom burn anything but in the days when I had carp, unbalanced leccy rings to cook on food would often stick on, unless I was very careful, so I know that these all work.

Funny you should mention shampoo, there was a programme on bbc2 last night "Wonderstuff"about what goes into things like soap and shampoo. I was talking about it to my taxi driver and he said he only used Fairy Liquid!! I always thought that it contained a lot of salt , or is that on old wives tale??
