Good Evening!

Lovely Sunshine Meadows has agreed that I may have a poetry thread here...

rose

... and I've decided that the poetry most fitting to this forum is my hospital poetry, describing my many and varied experiences during February of this year....

yikes

... and some of it may be a little gloomy, of course. However, there is scope for much dark humour and strange meditations ...

magic

... and I invite people to read, comment and even join in the fun if they wish! But I've no expectations and I'm hoping to begin a creative writing course next month so no doubt some mentor will come my way ...

bubbly

Enjoy the journey!

The Patient
The doctor washed his hands, then took his leave.
  I combed my hair; my parents helped me pack;
The ambulance turned up – I did believe
  In just a few days’ time, I should be back.
But days turned into weeks; care first 'acute'
  'Came more haphazard with each passing date.
I lay in bed all day, made mostly mute,
  Such was the pain and worry for my fate.
At length I was deemed 'medically fit'
  And told that it was time to leave the ward.
I scarce dared hope that I indeed would quit
  This place; yet how my soul, ecstatic, soared.
Outside was rain and freshness and the hope
For all I had endured, I yet would cope.

Admission
They wheeled me in to A&E
with bag and bear and Mrs T,
my body shaking with the cold:
'It won't be long now', we were told.

And so we sat in gloomy bay
and watched the doctors make their way
to other patients, other beds,
for other histories, tests and meds.

At length a pleasant lady came:
a young lass, don't recall her name,
she took one look at Ulrich's face
and said, 'You're in the safest place.'

She wandered off to find a doc,
by now it was past six o'clock;
and then the good news: yes, you're in!
My mum said, 'Wish we'd brought some gin.'

The Incident
Such caution though I pleaded then, tried so hard to explain
that though so young in years, yes, I'm in a lot of pain,
my hopeful words were heeded not as grim X-ray technician
persisted in insisting on impossible position,
she rushed so fast to my white feet the huge X-ray machine;
I rose from trolley bedding, yikes, I must’ve been unseen:
the cold hard metal swiftly hit; my right leg was distorted;
recovery post trauma proves a plan that's mostly thwarted.

Raven Skull
We entered ACU, Ward C,
they dumped me down on number 3,
I lay in silence on my bed
and mused on all that had been said.

And then: disturbance! Cellmate near
awoke from nightmare, screamed of fear,
rose up from sleeping, clambered out,
then started up with gruesome shout:

'The ravens hover in my sight,
whenever you put out the light;
they follow everywhere I go;
oh don't you see them, don't you now?'

We calmed her from this Poe-esque scene,
and showed her kindness; she was mean,
but then a nurse came; smiling said,
'Oh there there sweetheart, back to bed.'

Note: I feel it necessary to state that I have a little empathy with those pursued by ravens; indeed, I was diagnosed with anxiety while in hospital and do suffer the occasional disturbance myself, the consequence of dealing with health matters. But a little humour goes a long way!

My Angie
On changing to a nearby ward,
I found myself alone;
since Mrs T had gone to call
good Mr T, by phone.

And so I thought, I'll take a walk,
and maybe just say hi
to other patients round about
as they enjoy their pie.

I started off with single crutch
and ambled here and there,
and some folk smiled and some folk waved;
one chap preferred to stare!

I saw a lady racked in pain
and yet she grinned at me,
and so I shuffled up to her,
and asked, 'Who might you be?'

And she replied, 'I'm Angie, love,
an angel, you might say!'
I laughed, said, 'Angie, thanks for that:
you've brightened up my day!'

She took my hand, looked in my eyes,
said, 'I can tell, you're sweet.
It's really pretty tough in here,
and I'm so soddin' beat.'

I asked her, 'Are you in much pain?'
She grimaced, said, 'Well, yes.
They think I've got an ulcer now;
it's anybody's guess.'

Then I said, 'Well now, fancy that:
I've got an ulcer too!'
She laughed, said, 'We're the ulcer babes!
I'm so glad I met you.'

Prayer
At the end of the day
I sat quiet to pray
that all things would turn out just right:
I hoped that the morrow
would bring gladness, not sorrow,
then I wept away into the night.

Morning Gory
I slept perhaps two hours or so,
my heartstrings plucked by fear and woe;
the lights clicked on at just past six,
and added migraine to the mix.

The patient to my nearest right
had also passed a a tricky night:
had shouted harsh her take on fate
and woken up in quite a state.

They took her to the ladies' room,
a cold and bleakly tiled tomb,
and washed her well with standard soap,
at least, that was my naive hope.

And then they came to help me up
and give me pills from plastic cup,
the pain was such, I cried and cried,
yet one nice chap stayed by my side...

Super Matt!
He was perhaps just twenty-two,
a humble sort of lad,
and when he'd come to have a chat,
I'd never feel sad.

I've always got on well with boys;
the reason's plain to see:
I like to flirt and have a laugh;
it's no big mystery!

And Matt would gently pick me up,
and gently place me down,
and whereas some were miserable,
he'd never wear a frown.

And he was, oh, so very sweet
to patients, young and old;
and really quite a looker too:
a wonder to behold!

Trio
He wandered in from off the street:
a watchful brother and discreet,
he noted noise and crowd and heat.

She smiled much to have them there:
a silly sister full of care,
she laughed to see them chat with Bear.

He sauntered through and brought CDs:
a charming brother at his ease,
he grinned and joked of bugs and fleas.

On the Importance of the Craic
As second day drew to its dark'ning end,
  and visitors were told, it's time to leave,
I opted then to chat, perhaps befriend,
  since otherwise alone my soul would grieve.
In number one, a nice girl from abroad,
  but most times she'd be talking on the phone;
next door to me was tortured lady Maud,
  a soldier in some distant war-strewn zone;
and number four was dear sweet Rosemary,
  who liked to listen to my cheerful tales;
while Joy from number five took such great glee
  in contemplating stranger acts of males.
Six slept the while, attached to grim machines;
I felt restored, tucked in to mash and greens.

 Young Pain

That's too rare, they said
It can't be that
You're too young for this
And please don't come back.

You can't be in pain
Your years are too few.
And the tests are all back
There's nothing new.

Everything says still
That you are just fine
Perhaps come back
Some years down the line.

Saviour
No rosy-fingered Dawn was there,
no peaceful day of rest;
as Satan's lights clicked into being
with screaming, cursing zest.

My curtains swished, some chap came in,
I kept my wide eyes shut;
he felt about my burning joints
and noted deep'ning cut.

He said, 'Don't worry, you'll be fine,
you just need more IV;
a nurse'll come and sort you out,
and then, a cup of tea!'

I opened up my eyes to this
and smiled in my pain;
I saw he was a handsome doc,
and so I lived again.

Metabear!
Have you e'er met a bear that was *gasp* Metabear?!
At first he might seem just quite sweet,
with his beady brown eyes,
so it's quite a surprise
when you find that you fall at his feet...

Time was you were young, he was there by your side,
a cheery companion all day,
but since you've been grown
he has sat all alone,
on a dusty old shelf, tucked away...

But times become tough as we journey through life,
and sometimes our loves are away;
so it's natural then
to be childlike again,
to need hugs at the end of the day...

And just as George Herbert imparts in t'Elixir
(it's really a cunning good plan),
take an object of choice
and then, ah, do rejoice,
as it takes on a form above Man!

For that is when you will meet *shout* Metabear!
No less than philosopher king!
He will help sail your craft
through turns prudent and daft,
and oh, so much strange happiness bring!

Note: Ahem. Hospital's a difficult place to be, and so my presence proved most therapeutic.

Joy in Pain
Dear Joy had suffered very much
through cancer's evil, grasping touch;
the standard treatment, chemo care,
had robbed her of her long thick hair.

And yet she managed to be glad
although the pain was often bad;
but then her old man would arrive
and so her spirits would revive.

I liked to see him sit or stand
and always hold his dear wife's hand;
her face lit up as he walked in
past handwash basin and grey bin.

They'd had tough times, she told me once,
and some days he'd be such a dunce!
Yet he was ever good and true,
a loyal husband through and through.

Ch-ch-ch...
Change came that evening as I lay
at peace with Metabear,
a nurse I liked had just been round
to comb my tangled hair.

And Mrs T turned up on time
with fresh new clothes and book,
while Mr T read out my notes
with a sarcastic look.

Then suddenly a nurse popped up
and said, 'It's time to shift:
you're off to Hazleton right now,
so come on, porters, lift!'

We weren't prepared for this quick move,
yet gathered up my stuff,
and then a porter wheeled me down,
a kind old chap, if gruff.

Of Death and Poetry
That night brought sadness, a patient had died:
relatives clustered, beside her bedside,
I watched this unfold, with grief in my heart,
and mused on Death's sting, that poisonous dart.
I'd never known Sue, I'd got there too late,
dark sounds I heard then, they laid her up straight,
placed her poor body inside a black bag,
zipped this up safely, then stapled a tag.

She'd had a friend here, a lovely old dear,
who spoke with mourners, and offered good cheer,
accepted a rose, from Sue's sweetest plant,
comforted brother, and sister and aunt.
And though I wept then, and feared for my life,
Philosophy came, and roused me from strife,
and then I witnessed, life is but a day,
Love is as rosebuds, to bloom cares away.

Ode on a Stasis Ulcer
Thou still unheal'd wound of pustulence,
  Thou harbinger of death and pain and grime,
Weep ye cryptographer, in grim essence,
  A cavern to inspire this gruesome rhyme.
What ailing fragments lie around thy sides
  Of rotting skin and scalings, and decay,
    In Hades or the fields of no man's land.
What silent graves are here? What dark'ning day?
  What bitter chase? What woe resides?
    What black torment? What hellish agony?

Soft bandages are good, but sweet honey
  Is better; and so, TV Nurse, game on!
With strewing careful and precise on me
  Manuka gift that thou from gods hast won.
Dear leg, beneath the sheets, thou must be still
  And safe, and suffer silent in repair.
    Hot Plasteral! The liquid seeps within
And soothes upon my soul with smiling Air:
  'Ulrich is bad, bad Ulrich' -- and until
    He took his leave, I'd nowhere else to go.

Hot Stuff!
Struttin' in thinkin' he's God's gift, baby,
reckonin' he's sexy an' fit,
lookin' at him, I'm laughin', gigglin' maybe,
mutterin', You're such an eejit!

Chorus...
Doctor A's got 'Hot Stuff' play as his ringtone
Doctor A thinks 'Hot Stuff' suits him so well
Doctor A struts 'Hot Stuff' everywhere he goes
Why's he think he Hot Stuff?
Why's he think he Hot Stuff?
He needs Hot Stuff
He wants some Hot Stuff
He needs Hot Stuff

Searchin' round the bedsides to get some attention
why can't he do his job an' be nice?
Way he moves, it don't even bear a mention,
some simple doctorin'd suffice!

Chorus

Hot, hot, hot, hot stuff
hot, hot, hot
Hot, hot, hot, hot stuff
hot, hot, hot

Chorus

So settle down and just do your job now, young man,
stop givin' me that very strange wink,
if anyone can do flirtin', you know I can,
an' I could make you flush pretty pink!

Chorus to fade

Night Nurse
She moved serenely to my side
to change the IV drip
and as I wept and softly sighed,
she whispered, 'Get some kip.'

And so I slept an hour or two
before she came again,
with gentle murmur, 'How are you,
and how's that nasty pain?'

And when she smiled and joked with me,
and stroked my tangled hair,
I almost felt that I was free
from this dark world of care.

But night flew by too soon, worse luck,
then migraine stirred once more,
and nurses hastened to untuck
my sheets as I lay sore.

Hope he takes his ego somewhere different,

A*
The morning visits brought to me another Doctor A,
yet this personage smiled with me and brightened up my day;
they called her Pocahontas and it suited her quite well,
a conscientious princess in that fiery pit of Hell.

Her eyes were brown, her hair was soft, her voice was violin,
a soothing sound amid the shouts and swearing and the din;
and since the nurses likened me to Ariel some days,
it seemed we dwelt in Disneyland, where no dark thoughts could faze.

Fresh Air
I...
liked to look out on the world below,
fly...
my memories to distant
past..., and wonder whether I could
last..., in this pain, that would grasp my soul as
poison, inflict wound as a foe...

Weep...
as the raindrops trickled from the trees,
sleep...
and dream of such a simpler
time..., when I could skip and run and
climb..., as a child, in the woods with bros and
Koala, laughter soft as the breeze...

Since, I am a stoic lass, I
soon cleared my thoughts of grief, and this was easy,
in my cell, I had, a true friend,
nurturing me to ever green leaf...

She, in days of yore, had
inspired one to pass his time full of hope...
So, she remained, by my
side, in my heart...
And, when suffering prevailed, she would not
leave, but held my hand... and
helped me through, this Hell, just as in times gone by
she had aided Boethius...

When, he had been locked away, for charge of conspiracy, and just as he was
racked by doubt, and fear, and worry,
so did his dear muse smile as she came to me...
So, I was restored by her
comforting and journeyed away from there,
to, far away, promised
land, rainbow's end...

And, as I prepared for bed, who should
arrive, from ward acute... but
Angela, my joy, who was to prove in the
next few days my star and my light.

Bric-a-Brac
The early morning brought with it
a visit from OT:
a pretty, healthy, smiling lass
who knew about my knee.

She came with cards and catalogues
and various strange aids;
then disappeared from time to time
to cupboards for dark raids.

A Zimmer frame, another crutch,
and one more pick-up stick;
a sort of steel basket too,
which wasn't very slick.

I looked at all these handy tools
and had a laughing fit!
regained by Mr T's remarks;
he always was a wit!

Case of the Ex
In my dreams
I'd always see us
soar in golden light

In my pain
I'd always pine for
your strong arms
to see me through the night

I missed
our soulful warm embrace
you never once
stepped foot inside this place

and time revealed
your true deceiving face.
