To add to my general misery with my back being so painful, both cats have ear mites.   A cat I had many years ago had them, so I recognise the 'coffee grounds' appearance of their ear wax.

I cannot get them to the vets in the state I'm in and the vets won't prescribe ear mite treatment unless the see the cats, so this morning I sent off for ear mite treatment online.

I've ordered Otodex Ear Drops, so I hope they will work as ordinarily I'm not keen on buying treatment items from pet shops. It does say they are for feline ear mites though.

Now I'm getting neurotic about have I caught them myself - especially as my head has been really itchy this last week.

Every so often I get a really itchy scalp so it is 'normal' for me and two people have had a good look through my hair and said I don't have nits, but of course I'm thinking it is mites!!

Feline ear mites don't migrate to humans, do they?

Oh, talking of cats, my namesake has just wandered in and is half on my lap, making it tricky to type (parents have gone away again as the weather has been so summery, so I am cat-sitting again....)

Good luck with applying the ear drops smiley100

I agree with Kizzy, good luck with getting them in - might you be able to get someone to help? My cat needed ear drops when I first got him, and at one point ended up climbing onto my head to get away from them! I don't know if they're available without prescription or not, but his flea treatment now includes ear mites and worms, and is a spot on the skin application, much easier.

The carers are very good and will hold the cats for me.

I'll feed them afterwards, so they will be rewarded for being ear dropped.

Is the flea treatment which includes ear mites and worms on prescription only?

If it is, the vets have the monopoly.  Because even if you want to buy the treatment elsewhere, the vet will charge a humungous amount for the prescription, which has to be bought again and again and again.

Hi Yvette

Yes, unfortunately it does seem to be prescription only. It's called Advocate. I'm thinking of changing to a cheaper brand though, especially now I've got a new little pickle!

The ear mite situation is progressing.

The liquid solution is bringing up lots of black detrius (mite poo) up to the top of the ears so it can be wiped away with a cotton swab (from my colostomy supplies but we won't tell anyone!!)

Apparently, when all the black stuff stops appearing the mites have been eradicated.

I've heard of the new flea, worms and anti-mite treatment and am going to start them on it when they are next due.
