Hello there,

I am terribly sorry I have not posted before (although I've read all the threads!)

I just wanted to ask about fastenings on baby clothes. I'm 23 weeks pregnant and I have been practicing the popper buttons with a baby gro and a doll. Although I'm getting faster, I'm not sure how I'd do them if I was feeling any way tired, and besides, the way I hold the doll wouldn't be the same way I'd hold my child!!!

However, when the baby moves, I'm not sure I'd have the patience to do the snap/popper buttons!

Does anyone know any way to avoid the popper buttons on baby clothes? Would velcro be suitable?  Bigger snap buttons? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Oh, by the way my disability is Cerebral Palsy, and while it's not too severe, co-ordination is not my forte!

Thanks everyone,
independentgirl84.

Hello and .

The only thing I ca add is to remind yu that there is no law which says that every popper/button has to be done up all the time ...

Just don't use babygrows! The popper outfits are more useful when the child reaches the age where they are old enough to slip out of a nappy but not old enough to realise that it's a poor idea! Just put normal trousers on them. Also have a look at pyjamas, there are many which you slip one leg in then pull up a zip from knee to chest.

Congratulations Independentgirl.  What wonderful news.

We now have two OuchToo pregnancies!! Hurrah!

I must admit I'm not keen on the velcro idea.

If the velcro became twisted and the hard needle sharp side came into contact with a baby's very delicate skin it would be really painful for the poor baby and could even make the baby's skin bleed.

If your co-ordination isn't that brilliant with poppers, trying to make sure the sharp side of a velcro fastener was fully covered by the soft side of the velcro, could be even more difficult than poppers.

And as Hurtyback says, you don't have to do up each and every popper every time.

You probably can't get them now, but when my son was small, all babies (even boy babies) wore night gowns, day and night.  They tie up at the back, and you don't even have to actually tie them, as they will stay on untied.

Hello again, just logged in to check the replies and wow, thanks so much for taking the time to give me this advice!
Hurtyback, somebody told me that it may not be necessary to do every popper. I must admit, I'm getting better and faster at them now!
Rose, thanks for your advice too. I'm actually on the prowl for clothes with no poppers and I've seen little tshirts/cardies/trousers in Tesco (thank God!!!) I know they might come off more easily when he/she starts crawling though. A friend said to use tights, but I'm not sure of the sex yet, and not sure my hubby would be pleased with his son wearing tights!
Yvettea, somebody else was concerned when I mentioned velcro, for the very same reasons you have said... So maybe that's not an option. Good to know though! Would that rule zips out too??
Roxy, thanks for offering your support -good to know you're there!
Thanks again guys and I must say, 'tis a great forum Sunshine Meadows has set up here.

All the best, independentgirl84 xxx

Hi independentgirl - oh great post! I'm 27 weeks - and looking to get a doll to practice stuff on too. This subject is making me rethink some of my clothing options.

Have you got some of those sleeping bag things for night time - a friend gave me loads.

Also got my eye on a swaddlepod, which is a way of swaddling that uses a zip (my niece loved to be swaddled, though I know not all babies are into it).

Any luck with getting an OT to help with stuff?

My current issues are finding slings, bathing, and as wheelchair user, how to cope with changing nappies, etc. So if you've anything else going on - ask away, because you and me might be on the same problem solving right now!

Hope your wriggly is doing well - I've got a wee hiccupy boy, who really really likes to hiccup. FS x

Hi John, just had a look at that website you recommended! Great stuff, but so expensive! I may rob a bank!!
Fairysparkle, congrats on your little boy! Not sure whether mine is a boy or girl, but he/she is very busy in there! Doing what, I don't know.

I was very lucky in that I was able to get an OT very early into the pregnancy. Maybe I was a little rude but I demanded one, because I knew exactly what my issues were. They weren't very knowledgeable about adaptive equipment, but they did give me some hand-eye co-ordination exercises to work on, to try and improve my dexterity.

I don't have the website to hand now, but I did find a changing station online a few months ago, and you can strap the top half of the baby into it so all you have to concentrate on is changing the nappy. I will find the website for you, promise! or maybe if you know someone who's handy at DIY, maybe they could design and make one for you?

As for bathing, well, there's no rule that I know of that says you have to give baby a traditional bath. Even giving him a good wash with a facecloth every day until he can sit up a little better? I wonder is there anything you could sit a baby into, like a plastic seat, that you could strap baby into and lower into the bath??

You and I could go into business together - there's definitely a gap in the market for this stuff!

Hi Mums-to-be,

Babies do not need bathing every day - indeed, Mothers are now advised to just 'top and tail' daily and bath once or twice a week to avoid stripping baby's skin of the protective oils. They don't really need regular baths until they are mobile and getting dirty. Also avoid all of the 'Johnsons' type bath products as so many babes are sensitive to them, plain water is fine in most cases (the first thing that HV's ask when a mother asks about baby's dry skin/eczema is 'What are you using in the bath?). I used to stick HurtyBoy into a washing up bowl to bath him when he was small, or we would take him in with us, we never bough a designated baby bath.

HurtyBoy also wore tights during his first winter, as I found that he lost socks and his feet got very cold. Blue or white tights under trousers are indistinguishable from socks to the casual onlooker!

A wriggly baby is difficult to dress and nappy change no matter what you do. sometimes it is like trying to dress a greased octopus! I tried one of the changing mats with straps - HurtyBoy turned over and crawled off with it attached to his back like a turtoise with a shell :¬)  Newborns are a bit easier as they can be very wriggly but not yet mobile - so at least you get a bit of time to practice before you have to deal with them crawling away in the middle of a nappy change. I guarantee that every mother has had to deal with baby sticking his/her foot into thecontents of a dirty nappy, no matter how hard you try to avoid it!

I was AB when I had HurtyBoy but may of the lessons I learned (both as a mum and nurse) are transferable. Babies are not as fragile as we imagine - they would never survive childbirth if they were! There is no need to spend out a fortune on specific 'baby' products - some things have a 'non baby' alternative that is just as suitable but cheaper, some things are not needed at all. Not everyone 'bonds' immediately with their baby, this does not make them bad people or even bad mums.

Enjoy the remainder of your pregnancies - life will never be the same again1 :¬)

I too, bought a washing up bowl for bathing my baby.

When he graduated to the bath, I never used to sit him up.  I used to lie him down, so he couldn't overbalance and fall.  I only ever put an inch or two of water in the bath and he loved kicking his little feet and splashing his hands and arms.

I'd like to pass on some tips my mother gave to me.   Everyone probably knows them anyway, but it never hurts to repeat them.

Never, never, never leave a baby or toddler in the bath on their own, even just for a minute or two while you answer the phone, door bell or go to fetch a towel.  A couple of minutes are enough for a baby or toddler to drown, especially if they overbalance, hit their head and knock themselves out.

Get into the habit of always running cold water into the bath first.   That way, when babies become toddlers and suddenly try to be independent and atttempt to climb into the bath themselves, they cannot scald their feet or body, if you are distracted or are getting their nightwear ready.

Well said, Yvettea, it only takes a moment for something to happen. I remember leaving a toddler HB upstairs while I answered the phone downstairs once. He was playing in the bedroom while the bath was running. I went back to find him head first in the bath, holding himself out of the water with his arms ...

I wonder if Roxy is trying to tell us something?

Hey Yvettea, thanks for those tips, much appreciated!
I have to say, I'm finding it so hard to find any useful advice on the internet, so reading tips from people who know what it's like to have a disability is refreshing.
As for leaving a baby unattended- well, I'm the type of person who will carry on cooking (If the hobs on), turn off the iron, let the phone ring out etc if I'm busy. As far as I'm concerned, if something is really important, the caller will call back!!

RE:Fastenings on baby clothes

I love babies!! I had 3 and survived, and so did they!!

I used the washing up bowl, top and tail bowl thingy was a god send. I did use my baby box as it was easy to keep everything together. I had a baby nest down stairs, a carry cot on the pram and a cot and baby nest upstairs... the nests were second hand with new matressess. When little lady was tiny she looked like something from exorsist and could cover a wall at twenty yards with second hand milk. So it was easier to have a back up clean bed to put baby in when mopping up. Even when she wasnt sick if her nappy leaked it was great to have a clean bed for her, especially when i was so tired.

Babies dont need a hundred outfits a day and the fussier they are the more difficult to wash and iron.

I got wipes by the ton as they clean a multiple of sins, have dentinox or other colic drops before the baby get colic for the first time, usually at 3am on sunday morning on a bank holiday weekend... Like a girl guide Be Prepared!

I had intended to feed purly at the breast, i unfortunately had a back problem made worse with pubis symphis dysfunction and i had to have heafty drugs, Then there was a mad rush to get bottles steriliser milk powder etc.

I had more difficulty with my own hygeine than with looking after the baby. Having someone to do the donkey work and bath watch for you is a god send.

Dont try to be super human, baby just needs food, clean bum, and sleep for a good few months. Anything else doesnt really matter that much.

Enjoy your babies!!

Hi independentgirl

If you fancy PM me then I can introduce you to a wee group I've got together on facebook (private group) for sharing equipment ideas. We have two wheelie mums and a bunch of enthusiastic, honest posters that will tell you all sorts about what's useful, whats not. (and wouldn't it be fun to set up a group with a high proportion of disabled ladies to AB ladies. Of course there is a market - if equipment was designed by the wobblies, it would be very likely better suited for all, as we are top class problem solvers).

On the bath front - I would not feel safe taking baby into bath, or bending over a baby in a big bath as they are just too wiggly. I have my eyes on a Tummy Tub right now. Google it - and admit it, what cute looking babies they have got in there. Also another bath I like the look of that I'll post up. One wheelie mum recommends a bath on a stand you can use whilst sitting - am not sure, but might be easier on back. Totally agree with posts about top and tailing, and using face cloth wipes when possible - very helpful advise. Think am am aware that bathing can also help with colic, etc, so do want option of popping them in for a soak with ease.

Ah, money... why doesn't it grow on trees?
I was going to postpone trying for a bub until I was in a 'more secure financial situation', and then I realised, yup, that's not gonna happen any time soon!
Luckily me and hubby both work part time, and I know couples who bring in a lot less than we do and still raise their kids!
However, when I showed hubby the magnetic babygros, he wanted to buy loads of them!! At about 29euro a piece, I said no way could we afford that! So I brought the doll and babygro to bed last night and continued to practice. Maybe I'll win the Lotto this weekend!

the above may be of some interest to the mummys to be.

this company do custom made gadgets for disabled people.  2 of the case studies made me think you new mums to be.

one is for a walking wobbly mum to push a pram hands free while using crutches

and another is for a wheely mum to get their little bundle about.

What about nighties for bed time and staying in. John lewis do boys and girls ones. I got one from john lewis that had a ribbon at the bottom to pull it into a little sleeping bag shape I also found the in line staight buttons on their other style easier to do than having to do up the butons on the bum part of a baby grow.  nighty is much easier when butt changing in the semi dark when your not complety with it.
