On Wednesday, Rep. Bill Young (R-FL) showed how much he cares about his constituents and their concerns. Asked by a constituent if he would support a Democratic bill to raise the minimum wage, Young repeatedly told the questioner to "get a job"—even though the man responded that he does have a job.
Constituent: Hi, I'm Pepe, how are you? Happy Fourth of July. Jesse Jackson, Jr. is passing a bill around to increase the minimum wage to 10 bucks an hour. Do you support that?

Young: Probably not.

Constituent: 10 bucks an hour would give us a living wage.

Young: How about getting a job?

Constituent: I do have one. $8.50 an hour.

Young: Well, then why do you want that benefit? Get a job.

Constituent: I have a job. It's not enough to get by on.

I think we've had this discussion before. While my wife and daughter both would get a raise if the minimum wage would be increased to $10/hr, in the long run I believe that we would be further behind than when we started.  Why you ask? Because all the services being provided by the minimum wage earners would be increased to cover the new raises. The vast majority of us who make more than minimum wage won't see an increase in our wage, so we, in effect, would be losing money as we pay more for all those increased goods and services. It's unfortunate, but it's a never ending cycle. Raise wages, prices go up. Prices go up, raise wages. And on and on we go. I don't see the benefit.

And before I hear the argument that I don't care about the poor, I WAS the poor when I entered the work force. I started our making just above minimum wage in 1983 working for Bernie at the Clinton House Restaurant. I worked that job for 4 years making $4/hr and never got a raise. I left there and went to Bucknell food service for $5.15/hr. 8 years later I was making $8 and left for my current job where I started at $9.79/hour. I've been there 17 years and make close to $30/hr. The moral of the story is that I worked my way up. I went to WACC for welding and when I graduated and couldn't find a job welding I didn't sit around and whine about it, or go protest Wall Street or Government, I went to work at what was available to me for what someone was willing to pay me. I had college loans to pay and other bills that I was responsible for so I took what life handed me and made the best of it. I didn't start out at the top, I started out at the bottom and worked my way up. I don't understand why so many people fail to realize that that's how you do things in this country.

What arrogance you have Mike.  The prices will go up, well guess what prices have been going up without an increase to minimum wage. The income inequality gap has grow.  But hey that is all because of minimum wage. You just advocated for the poor to be poorer because you think you pay too much for goods when the reality is Mike you are being paid too little.

Really Chuck? I'm arrogant because I point out the truth that raising minimum wage does nothing to bring about the income equality you so would like to see? We just recently HAD an increase in 2007 from $5.15 to $7.25. And now we want to raise it again to $10. That tells me that raising the minimum wage doesn't work. Working your way up is what works.
